Spirulina, what is it ? The spirulina is a micro-algae that grows in fresh water bodies. If it grows naturally in some lakes in Chad and Mexico, its success has led to the creation of many ” farms spirulina “, particularly in France.
In the natural state, it is a blue-green, and observed under a microscope, it has a spiral shape, hence its name. After harvest, it is dried in the sun and then crushed and sold as powder, capsules, tablets, capsules,…
Why spirulina is a “super-food ” ? Because it is ultra-rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients good for the health ! Low in calories, spirulina contains between 55 % and 70 % vegetable protein, and it is an excellent source of antioxidants (beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin…), and iron (3 mg to 8 mg per 5 g).
Spirulina, a super food… that can also cook !
According to several studies, spirulina would be effective against type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol : in some countries, it is even grown in the fight against malnutrition.
Where can I find the spirulina ? Caution : in November 2017, the national Agency health safety of food of environment and labour (Anses) has warned consumers against some dietary supplements based on spirulina can contain traces of heavy metals, toxins and bacteria.
The health authorities therefore recommend the focus circuits “classic” and “best controlled” for buy : pharmacies and drugstores, among others. Otherwise, some “farms spirulina” the French also offer products of quality, organic and local.
