Are you between hair appointments and your hair is growing back randomly? You are going to a ceremony and would like a hairstyle a little more sophisticated than your wise square? Or would you simply like to vary the pleasures and change your head from time to time?
It’s not always easy to style your hair when you have short hair, and there’s a tendency to think that pretty hairstyles, braids and other chignons are reserved for women with long hair. But nay! Just because you have short hair doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it.
Just a few minutes is all it takes to radically transform a short haircut! Here are a few ideas for techniques and hairstyles that are easy to do and require very little equipment: a curling iron if you want to change the type of hair, some hairspray, a few bobby pins and some wax, you’re ready!
If you are reading this article because you want to change your head or hesitate to cut your hair, I can only advise you this very well done article by Audrey, “How to find your hairstyle” to help you define your face type, and give you hairstyle ideas that will suit you.
If you think you need Rapunzel’s hair to create beautiful braided hairstyles, think again! Glued, flat, herringbone, braids can be adapted to any length and if they sometimes require a little patience and training for the most sophisticated of them, it’s well worth the effort!
On a simple square cut, why not make a braid glued on the front of the head? No need for precision or perfection, the result will be adorable whatever your mastery of braiding! I even think it’s prettier if the result is a little fuzzy and the braid is loose enough, it will give a bohemian and romantic touch to your hairstyle, especially if you texture your hair a little with a seawater spray. Hide the end of the braid under the rest of the hair with a discreet flat clip and that’s it!
For a more sophisticated result, on a well-structured cut, try several African braids, making the biggest one on the top of the head and refining them on the temples… It requires a little time or the help of a friend, but will be of the most beautiful effect if you have to go to a ceremony for example, the result being both elegant and a little rock, it will combine perfectly with all styles.
Perfect for going to work or going out, this crown braided around the head and leaving a few loose strands is very easy to wear and doesn’t require a lot of hair length. Feel free to wave your hair slightly if it’s naturally straight for a more relaxed result. You can then spike it with hair jewelry, barrettes or other flowers to add style and adapt this hairstyle to the occasion.
What could be simpler than twists? They require absolutely no know-how or special skills and help to achieve beautiful hairstyles in a jiffy! A twist is simply a strand of hair that you turn on itself… a piece of cake, isn’t it?
For example, you can take two strands of hair around your face, twist them together and tie them to the back of your head with flat tweezers and you’re done! You’ll clear your face beautifully and efficiently and change your hairstyle in no time at all.
A hairstyle that I like very much and that I used to do very often when I had short hair is the following: separate your hair into three equal parts, twist and wrap these strands on themselves and fix them on the nape of the neck with bobby pins. You can do this style neatly on straight hair, but it also works great with a little fuzz or loose strands.
Another very simple and feminine idea: clear your face by twisting a few strands that you bring back to the back of your head and fix them in the center by twisting them one on top of the other vertically. Secure them with a few bobby pins and a bit of hairspray if your hair is very thin or tends to slip, and you’re done!
3) Crank or loop
Your short hair is desperately straight and you’d like a little more volume? You can try changing your head a little by curling it or adding texture. Here are some ideas in pictures:
Why not try a nice retro notch, like Cécile de France? Nothing could be simpler, just place bobby pins on each side of your face on wet hair and let it air dry. Once your hair is completely dry, remove the clips, and you’ll get this feminine, retro style.
You can also simply give your hair a little body and a wavy effect by using texturizing powder or seawater spray. Spray all over your hair, crumple it up and voilà! And if you want to change even more, why not change your side parting? You’ll feel like you just walked out of the barbershop with a whole new cut!
If you want to get curls, you will need a curling iron or very thin heating rollers. The secret to a beautiful result? The shorter your hair is, the narrower the diameter of your curling iron needs to be. I don’t recommend using this technique too often to avoid damaging your hair, so think about it for a special occasion instead. And most importantly, never use your curling iron on wet hair, or else you’ll get damage!
To make sure you avoid making mistakes that damage your hair, please refer to this article: “The 5 Most Common Mistakes That Damage Your Hair”.
4) Luster, gumming, plating
To achieve the opposite effect, i.e. ultra-smooth hair that stays in place, you will definitely need gel or wax, which you will choose according to the desired effect. Beware of the oily hair effect, for example!
If you have frizzy hair, the back-patterned look will not lack panache on a short cut! Simply style it backwards and smooth it out with a little hairspray. And to keep the volume that’s right for your hair type, you can flatten the strands above the ears with flat clips, for example.
The slick hair effect, or wet hair, also works great on straight hair! It brings a very elegant side when it is well done. Be very careful with the gel you choose, there are special “wet hair effect” gels that I recommend to avoid the oily hair effect. You can either draw a clean parting on the side of the hair, or put your hair backwards, both are very nice.
On a boyish or very short cut, why not try the glamorous look? Make a clean stripe down the side and seal each section with gel or wax. The result will be both glamorous and trendy with its side hair effect. Don’t hesitate to polish your makeup and wear a feminine outfit to balance the masculine side of this hairstyle, the effect will be even more successful.
5) Dare the bun!
Like braids, the bun is not reserved for long hair! Perfect for a more formal or professional style, you would be wrong to deprive yourself of it: much quicker than blow-drying or straightening your hair, it will quickly become the best ally of your busy mornings!
This elegant bun, which clears the nape of the neck in all simplicity, is really quick to make and doesn’t require a lot of material: isolate the top part of your hair and tie it with an elastic band close to your hair color. Gather the rest of your hair into a low ponytail, then lift and run the end of it over the elastic of the first section to hide it. Then secure it with a bobby pin, and you’re done!
A great classic that always makes its effect, and can also be done on short hair, the banana bun! It lengthens the neck and therefore gives a very feminine look, perfect for all women. For a version on short hair, you’ll need more clips than on long hair to prevent your strands from escaping, but otherwise the principle is the same!
Place your hair back as if you were going to make a ponytail and then start winding the lengths tight enough to hold the bun. Simply roll it all the way up on your head and then secure it with bobby pins along the entire length. Don’t hesitate to spray lacquer to ensure a perfect hold.
Simpler and less formal, the bun bun will look very nice on short cuts with a minimum of length. Simply style your hair in a ponytail, preferably with an elastic band of the same color as your strands to hide it more easily, and distribute the hair harmoniously all around the elastic band. Then wrap the remaining strand of hair around the rubber band and secure it with bobby pins and hairspray.

6) Use and abuse accessories
You don’t always think about it, especially when you have a short haircut, but hair accessories are a great way to add style to your outfit and create different looks. They dress up the simplest cuts and help you change your head in two minutes flat. There’s so much to choose from online and in-store, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for, whether it’s to try new things or complement your style.
Same recommendation as for clothes, choose good quality, in pretty materials or materials, and avoid plastic alligator clips or other crocodile clips, which will only give your hairstyle a neglected look.
Which ones to try? All of them! Have fun creating new styles, and opt for accessories of all kinds, you will soon become addicted!
Personally, the scarf has always been my favorite accessory, it brings style and color to the most basic outfits, and works especially well in hair. To be in the know about how to choose and wear it, I can only encourage you to read this article: “How to Wear a Scarf”.
For a style that is both retro and a bit rock, the bandana tied over the head is a sure bet. If you prefer a longer scarf, be careful how you tie it on short hair! You can for example make a knot or a worked twist on the top of the head, but if you prefer to use it as a headband and tie it in the nape of the neck, prefer to do it on the side and not in the back, it will be much more feminine. Also be careful not to crush your strands, to keep the structure of your cut.
The Internet, and Pinterest in particular, are full of good advice and tutorials on how to tie the scarves around your head, all you have to do is choose a style that suits you, and practice a little! I recommend choosing a silk scarf, which will not damage your hair and will be perfect for any occasion.
Headbands and head bands
If you have very little length, headbands and headbands are for you! Headbands, especially, will hold in place better on very short or thin hair, or remember to secure your head band with a clip or a slightly longer strand.
A jeweled head band will look great on back-plated hair, bringing a sophisticated touch to an otherwise very simple style. For big occasions, like a wedding for example, you can opt for a voluminous head band that you’ll place on the front of your head or on your forehead, taking inspiration from styles from the 20s and 30s, perfect for finding good ideas for short hair!
What could be easier than putting a headband on the top of your head? Choose it thin enough if you don’t have a lot of length for a modern style, and play with volume by creating a shell or creping your hair behind the line defined by your accessory.
In addition to their practicality, barrettes are a great fashion accessory. Used close to the face, they will illuminate it while releasing it nicely, so don’t hesitate to choose them metallic or in jewelry version, decorated with rhinestones or pearls, to bring a maximum of light.
They’re very easy to use and will fit any hair type or hairstyle, you can even have fun accumulating them around your face for a very modern look. Choose rather simple and graphic bars to avoid the bling-bling overload, you will be amazed by the result!
You can of course wear your barrettes at the back of your skull, to accessorize half a tail for example, or simply to beautifully clear your face and avoid having hair in your eyes. Well chosen, a barrette will bring a bit of sophistication to your hairstyle while remaining simple and modern. And all this in no more than thirty seconds!
