African Cup of Nations: One dead and 40 injured in stampede before Madagascar’s match against Senegal in 2019 AFCON qualifier

ONE PERSON died and another 40 were injured in a stampede ahead of Madagascar’s clash with Senegal today.

The 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier was marred in tragedy after the disaster outside the Mahamasina Stadiumin in Antananarivo.

Hrja Hospital director, Oliva Alison Rakoto, confirmed: “In all, there are 41 patients that entered the hospital including one dead on the spot and two in fairly precarious states.

“The two critically injured patients have head and thoracic trauma.”

The stampede occurred at the entrance of the national stadium just before 2.30pm kick off.

Thousands of fans had been waiting outside since early morning in order to secure their spot.

Henintsoa Mialy Harizafy, 30, told AFP her uncle left home at 8am and blasted football officials for deciding to only open one entrance for such a huge game.

She said: “We heard he was hospitalised here after being trampled in the stampede.

“I don’t understand why only one entrance gate was open for such a big match.”

Meanwhile another fan, Rivo Raberisaona, revealed he had been queuing since 6am.

He said: “We were a metre and a half (five feet) from the entrance when the stampede happened. I was trampled in the back, but my rucksack softened the blow.”

Despite the tragedy the match still began on time with a crowd of 20,000 watching the 2-2 draw unfold.

According to AFP’s report, families could be heard cheering with joy in the hospital waiting room when Madagascar equalised through Carolus Andriamahitsinoro.

Inter Milan star Keita Balde Diao and Moussa Konate were the goalscorers for Senegal with Paulin Voavy netting the other for the hosts to leave both nations on four points after two qualification games.
