My sister, Emily Mercedes, painted this for me about six months ago. It was her way of expressing how she thinks people perceive theCHIVE. She’s a fantastic artist, good at metaphors.
This is Chive Island, built into the bedrock and a steadfast light in the dark. Truth be told we actually tried building bridges to our fellow humor sites about a year ago to create a united front against the relentless Facebook onslaught. Strength in numbers, right? For a number of reasons a deal never materialized.
Then one by one every single website in the comedy vertical fell like dominoes, culminating with the collapse of College Humor two weeks ago.
Never build your castle in the sand.
In the end we doubled down on our community while the rest doubled down on Facebook’s promise to unite publishers and create a comedy-friendly ecosystem. For the publishers, by the time the cold hard truth revealed itself, it was too late. When Facebook finally showed its hand, it was full of jokers.
And so Facebook deliberately destroyed comedy in America, leaving only one, theCHIVE.
I think there’s a general consensus amongst theCHIVE community that we’ll figure it all out – That the team here can work a problem to a positive conclusion. Even if that means the course of action is to take Facebook and Google head-on for survival. It’s a dangerous game to play and we definitely play it on the razor’s edge. But I believe fortune favors the bold.
At some point you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and face the horizon. As the lone survivor, I don’t believe taking the “I’m just glad to be alive” approach is correct. I owe it to our community to put my head up and generate the necessary cumulative momentum to move forward with a purpose. So with that, we’re going to set the tone for 2020 here and now. I promised something refreshing and it is just that.
Here at theCHIVE we are tirelessly working for something greater than ourselves – a higher purpose – to make the world 10% happier. In that spirit we will now set the tone for 2020.
The sum total of our existence is to make you laugh. That’s our DNA and we will never lose sight of it. Far outside the walls of theCHIVE, people are ready to LAUGH.
The new year always brings hope, you resolve to lose weight, be healthier, and get off social media. But staring down another year of vitriol, bad news, and and election year, it can feel a bit grim. Thing is, there is a ton of good news out there and in 2020 people are going on a different kind of diet, a “low-bad” diet.
America is shedding what’s called a
negativity bias. The negativity bias, simply explained, is that no matter how much good happens to us we tend to focus on the bad. But something is happening – Over the past month there is a collective shift to purge the negativity bias in America. Screw the election cycle, damn the torpedos, America is ready to laugh again and they are not waiting until 2021.
We’re seeing it firsthand on theCHIVE. There are a few weekly staple posts on theCHIVE that you might not even know about that have flat-out exploded over the past 30 days as America looks to laugh again.

Here at theCHIVE and we’re going to focus on RAK’s again… big time. I started paying it forward last week by writing my brother’s phone number on bathroom stalls for fun. Kidding.
RAK’s will rise again in 2020. And just like the hilarious content on theCHIVE, The Chive Community will be our partner on that important initiative.
We’ve never made our Chivettes into unattainable fantasies like the magazines do. Our Chivettes are funny, approachable, and playful. And they are part of our Community. We verified more Chivettes last month than any month prior, explore the ‘Recently Verified’ right here! When I ask all the new Chivettes why they joined us they all say the same thing – The Chivers are nice, they represent a kinder side of the internet, not just some anonymous Instagram troll. Well…most of you, anyway.
On the meetup front it’s never been more important for us to unite, both online and off. We have an unofficial meetup in Dallas on March 7th, Ohio Chivers, we’re headed your way for the first time ever in June. And I’m excited to announce today that Chicago is finally getting the St. Patty’s Day meetup you’ve been asking for for a decade, and it’s going to be an absolute Irish banger. More on that soon!
While the publishing world zigged, we zagged. While they chased fools gold on social media, Leo and I invested every penny of company profits from 2015-2020 into bringing theCHIVE into businesses. The biggest gamble of our lives. Early on, we were the punch line. Critics said CHIVE TV would land like a lead balloon; we should stay in our lane. Five years later CHIVE TV is a global phenomenon watched by 30 million people a day, and its only purpose is to make you laugh. In the end, the joke was on the critics.

I’m in this with you. I just went to Vegas with two Chivers last weekend. Armando Colon and his buddy Michael Galvan won the monthly Gold Coin Grand Prize. We all flew to Vegas for a once-in-a-lifetime weekend. No other publisher does this and it’s one more reason to sign up for Chive ads-free.
