Alex Salmond arrives for trial to face 14 sexual assault charges

One of the 10 alleged victims in Alex Salmond’s attempted rape and sex assault trial has spoken of how he ‘pounced’ on her, stripped her naked on a bed and was ‘titillated’ by her objections, a court heard.

The 65-year-old faces 14 charges of alleged offences against 10 women, all of which he denies.

They include one of attempted rape, 11 of sexual assault – including one with intent to rape – and two of indecent assault.

Giving evidence today at the High Court in Edinburgh, the woman said the pair had been at the first minister’s official residence Bute House in Edinburgh in May 2014 when he had touched her inappropriately.

His defence lawyer has lodged special defences of consent and alibi.

The first witness, a Scottish Government official, gave evidence and said she was attacked at Bute House on two occasions between May and June 2014.

Prosecutors claim Salmond groped the woman’s breast inside her clothes while repeatedly kissing her, pinning her against a wall and removing her clothes before lying naked on top of her as he attempted to rape her, at the official residency on June 13, 2014.

She said Salmond had urged her to down shots on the first night she was assaulted.

She told the court that Salmond had a bottle of ‘clear white spirit’ that the Chinese ambassador had gifted him, and Salmond wanted her to stay and do shots with him.

She said: ‘He wanted to do shots with me.

‘It was very late, after 10pm.

‘Doing shots wasn’t an everyday occurrence, which was why it stands out in my memory.

‘He was putting his hand down my top and kissing my face and neck, and touching my legs.

‘He just groped me, I don’t have another word for it.

‘I froze inside, I verbally communicated that I wasn’t happy, I said ”what are you doing, you shouldn’t be doing this”, and he found it funny.

‘I was embarrassed and I felt humiliated, so no, I didn’t speak to anybody because I felt that I had done something wrong almost and I didn’t want people to know.’

She added: ‘He was titillated by the situation.’

The woman went upstairs to collect her belongings from another room but when she tried to return down a spiral staircase to leave, Salmond attempted to stop her again, the court heard.

She said he asked her to stay over which she eventually agreed to, but only if she stayed in another room with a door which locked.

She said: ‘I thought it was a bit of an escape plan.

‘I was afraid of making him angry.’

However, Salmond followed her into the room with a bottle of red wine and asked her to talk with him – but then ‘pounced’ on her, she said.

She added: ‘He talked to me for a second then full on pounced. He was physically all over me and taking my clothes off. I felt like I was in a bit of a trance.

‘I was telling him to stop the whole time. He took his shirt off. He got most of my clothes off first.’

Salmond pushed the woman on to the bed where he lay on her fully naked, the court heard.

She said: ‘He was just sitting over me at the foot of the bed naked.

‘I felt like I was being hunted.’

Asked if he was aroused, the woman said: ‘Yes.’

She told the court she wriggled free and left Bute House via a basement exit and flagged a taxi on Union Street and headed home around the time it was getting light.

Today, Mr Salmond’s lawyer Gordon Jackson QC lodged special defences of consent and alibi. Consent was given as a defence for three alleged sexual assaults and an alleged indecent assault against three women.

The first complainer in the Crown’s case against Salmond began giving evidence shortly before lunch and told the court she had supported independence.

She was asked by advocate depute Alex Prentice QC if she supported the objectives of the SNP.

The woman said: ‘I never grew up political. I was a soft supporter of independence but I wasn’t necessarily hardcore party politically orientated.’

Judge Lady Dorrian earlier told the jury of nine women and six men they must be ‘impartial’ during the trial.

The charges span a period between June 29, 2008, and November 11, 2014, with one sexual assault said to have taken place in the month of the Scottish independence referendum.

The judge said the accused is a ‘very well known figure’ and they should decide the case on the evidence heard in court and ‘nothing else’.

She added: ‘The overriding requirement that you must satisfy is that of impartiality.

‘If you think that there is any reason that you cannot be impartial you must inform the clerk.

‘You cannot allow yourselves to be swayed by sympathy or prejudice.’
