We’re approximately two weeks from the day that Avengers: Endgame will screen in the United States. It’s probably going to be the biggest moviegoing event in the world, and opening night is going to be particularly intense. No one wants to be spoiled, and the filmmakers are even more serious about protecting the plot than any fan could possibly imagine.
And so far, no major leaks have happened. It seems like that’s because of some very clever work behind the scenes and some of the actors having some… Coping mechanisms for reporters trying to pry scoops from potentially loose-lipped performers.
So, here’s a rundown of all the ways that the performers of the MCU are trying to keep its secrets (for at least two more weeks).
Ruffalo is a seasoned Hollywood actor. He’s been in the business for a LONG time, but despite his professionalism, he fucked up big time in 2017. At Disney’s D23 Expo that year, Ruffalo accidentally spoiled the ending of
According to Insider, Mark Ruffalo revealed in an interview that he was involved in filming FIVE different endings, all in order to throw Ruffalo off of the scent. On top of that, Ruffalo claims that there were “dummy scenes” in the script, fake scenes to add further confusion.
And on top of that, it wasn’t even the
Ruffalo definitely isn’t the only actor not to receive the whole thing, but we’ll get to that cast member soon enough…
Jeremy Renner and Paul Rudd
This was recently revealed in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, but it turns out Jeremy Renner’s solution to avoiding spoilers is just… Downright bizarre. In the interview, Renner revealed that he and Paul Rudd concocted a scheme together to avoid questions about
Avengers: Endgame by making up a fake movie about “50-year-old-virgins” that they could talk about instead.
It’s as weird as it sounds, and you can see
that interview here.
I’m not going to lie, Chadwick Boseman’s way of avoiding spoilers might be the best approach I’ve ever seen. Below is a clip from an interview at CinemaCon last week in Las Vegas. Boseman was there to promote a film he’s starring in called
21 Bridges, but the interviewer shifted the questions to Avengers: Endgame and Boseman’s responses are pretty uniform across the board.
According to an article from Indiewire, Holland literally didn’t know who he was delivering lines to during filming. A quote from the article:
Holland said, “The Russo Brothers are like ‘so you’re just standing here, and you’re fighting this guy and just do whatever,’ and I’m like, ‘Okay, who am I fighting?’ And they were like, ‘Well, we can’t tell you because it’s a secret.’ I’m like, ‘Okay so what does he look like?’ And they’re like ‘well, we can’t tell you because that would give it away’…I’m just standing there punching the air for 15 minutes and when I took the job I didn’t think that’s what I’d be doing. I’ve gotten used to it now.”
Well, that’s one way to deal with spoilers. To be fair, a lot of these films are shot against green screens, so it’s easier to make a movie that way, but it’s still kind of batshit that they’ve gone this far to hide what’s going on from Holland.
But credit where credit’s due, it’s working. We only have trailers and clips to go off of, and if past Marvel trailers are any indication, you can’t even trust that (re-watch the trailer for
Thor: Ragnarok, you’ll notice Thor definitely has both of his eyes in a scene where he’s definitely missing one in the final movie).
So, until April 25th, let’s hope it stays that way.
