Are you an ‘Onion’, ‘Lampshade’ or ‘Jellyfish’ dresser? These are the new silhouettes taking the fashion world by storm and how to master them at home

WE’VE all heard of the hourglass figure but with the new fashion season upon us comes a whole host of new trends – but have you heard of The Jellyfish? What about The Onion?

From layering your outfit with coats, cosy jumpers and flattering belts, to adding volume with an extravagant shoulder pad or a feather bolero, this season’s hottest silhouettes might not sound that flattering but boy, they’re in fashion!

The Jellyfish

Take a leaf out of Katy Perry’s fashion book with The Jellyfish trend.

No, there’s no testicles to contend with thankfully but the idea is to create volume around the shoulders, with a minimal look around the hips and legs.

First spotted on Gucci’s AW18 catwalk earlier this year, Katy Perry pulled off the look at the amfAR Gala in Los Angeles last week.

Teaming an outlandish feather and tulle bolero with a floor-length blue gown, Katy created the ultimate jellyfish silhouette.

Rita Ora and Lady Gaga are also fans of the oversized shape and have both opted for the look recently.

How to master the trend at home

The colder months are the perfect time to achieve this style and you don’t have to go as extravagant as Katy to pull it off.

For a casual take on the jellyfish, simply add an oversized wool scarf wrapped in a double-sided twist.

The thicker and bigger the scarf the better – in the past, we’ve even used blankets and sofa throws to achieve this look.

Another easy way to recreate the trend is with an oversized faux fur jacket; cropped rather than full-length will achieve a more voluminous silhouette.

The Onion

Another trend that’s ideal for winter is The Onion.

You might have guessed, but it’s all about layering.

Spotted on the Balenciaga catwalk earlier this year, Queen of style Blake Lively mastered this look in September.

The 31-year-old stepped out in Paris teaming a tulle midi dress with an embellished jacket layered underneath a khaki trench coat.

How to master the trend at home

One of the easiest trends to achieve, try layering a high-neck top (choose a thin material) underneath a printed midi dress or pinafore.

Add an oversized, long-length knitted cardigan and try teaming with a slim waist belt for a flattering silhouette.

For an extra cosy look, add a bright wool scarf for a pop of colour.

The Lampshade

If you’re already a fan of a cape dress or jacket, this one’s for you.

First spotted on the Givenchy runway show during Paris Fashion Week in March, The Lampshade trend is basically the opposite of The Jellyfish.

It’s all about volume around the legs, as opposed to the shoulders.

The best way to recreate this look is with a cape coat or dress, or an A-line skirt.

Natalie Portman pulled off the look at Venice International Film Festival in Italy earlier this year, wearing an A-line black Dior dress.

For a softer silhouette, you can also recreate this look with a simple skater dress or skirt.

The Hulk

Supergirl can do one as this season The Hulk is the superhero of choice as this trend is all about creating an oversized shape.

Think statement shoulders with broad padding, wide-leg culottes and hair slicked back to let the outfit do the talking.

Showcased on the Marc Jacobs runway earlier this year, it’s set to be everywhere this season.

At the launch of Rimmel campaign, I Will Not Be Deleted, Rita Ora stepped out in the ultimate power suit, ticking every Hulk trend box.

The Hulk is about creating a “box look”.

So, either copy Rita and choose a boxy blazer with broad shoulders and wide-leg trousers or opt for an oversized dress – the shapeless, the better.

Keep accessories and hair to a minimum.

Teaming with a slick pair of heels will create a stronger silhouette, so opt for stilettos or a stiletto boot.

The Clingfilm

Regularly showcased on the Kardashians, The Clingfilm is the total opposite of the box-cut Hulk, but thankfully you don’t need to be stocking up in the household aisle of your local supermarket!

Although spotted on a recent Stella McCartney show, the trend was beautifully modelled by Bella Hadid who wore a nude style at the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS Party.

It’s all about “clingy” tight fabrics – including bodysuits, unitards and jumpsuits.

How to master the trend at home

This style is the easiest – and cheapest – to recreate at home, thanks to several retailers.

Unitards especially are saturating the high-street at the moment, with the likes of Prettylittlething, Missguided and Boohoo selling a range of affordable, Kardashian-inspired ensembles.

We also revealed Sainsbury’s is selling a range of Dumbo sleepwear for babies from £6.75… and it looks adorable.
