Avoid buying cheap products that will cost you more in the long run with these top tips — play now to win £15,000 on the Sun Savers Raffle

YOU know what they say: “Buy cheap, buy twice.”

Many products can be bought for a bargain. But for others, you are better off paying a bit more to save in the long run. Here is my guide to avoiding a false economy.

Make sure you don’t end up paying more in the long run by going for cheaper products

Fairy Liquid: A standard bottle — £1.95 for 780ml at Tesco — may cost more than own-brand alternatives. But you need less of the Fairy concentrated, meaning a bottle will last longer than cheaper versions.

No choc swap: I love Cadbury’s Dairy Milk, no other chocolate bar tastes quite like it. There’s not much point swapping for a cheaper alternative. If you have a favourite treat, you are better off indulging in it. Just make sure you get the best deal. A 200g bar of Dairy Milk is on offer at Morrisons for £1.50, down from £2.

Squash it: When it comes to a glass of squash, you will often get the best deal by buying the more expensive double concentrate option. Swap your usual 1-litre Robinsons Orange Squash No Added Sugar, £1.50 at Tesco, for Robinsons 1.75-litre Double Concentrate No Added Sugar Orange Squash, £2. You get a bottle that is nearly double the size for only 50p more. Use half the amount per glass, so the bottle will last you far longer and save you money in the long run.

The wipe stuff: Many of us will agree that going super-cheap with loo roll is a false economy. Value brands may be much cheaper but they tend to be a lot thinner, so you end up using twice as much paper.

Bin bags: Buying budget bin liners could end up costing you more. They are prone to splitting and you may need to double up. This not only makes taking the rubbish out more of a chore, but also means your wallet is no better off.

For example, Sainsbury’s Basics refuse sacks, 75p for 20, work out at 4p a bag and have many reviews describing them as “too thin”. Meanwhile, the more expensive option of Sainsbury’s 20 tie-handle sacks, £2.70 (14p per bag), have been praised by supermarket customers as being much more sturdy.
