A baby boy is fighting for his life in hospital after he was thrown into a river from a bridge – as a man is arrested for attempted murder.
The child was rescued by firefighters with the support of a police helicopter, after being found in the River Irwell, in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester.
The youngster, whose age has not been confirmed, was given first aid at the scene before being rushed to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Police have arrested a man that was in the nearby Lock Keeper pub on suspicion of murder shortly before 4.25pm today.
Local media reported that police were seen going in and out of the pub during their investigations on Wednesday evening.
Eyewitnesses said that two fire engines, ambulances, multiple police vehicles and the GMP force helicopter were scrambled to the area to retrieve the boy.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Shortly before 4.25pm today (Wednesday 11 September 2019), police were called to reports that a child was in the River Irwell.
‘Emergency services attended and with the support of the police helicopter the child was retrieved and taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

‘A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody for questioning.
‘Blackburn Street is currently closed at the junctions with Stand Lane and Radcliffe New Road.
‘An investigation is underway and enquiries are ongoing.’
Members of the Radcliffe community have responded on social media, expressing their shock at the incident.
