Barcelona defender Umtiti is ‘not a Man Utd player’ says ex-Red Silvestre

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Mikael Silvestre claims that Samuel Umtiti is not the type of player the Red Devils are looking for.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after reports claiming Barcelona are willing to cash him in.

The Catalans are trying to raise funds in order to snap up yet another Ajax star – sought-after teenager Matthijs De Ligt.

United were interested in Umtiti’s services last summer, but their approach was rebuffed as the Frenchman was then one of the key figures at Nou Camp.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order having struggled with fitness problems this season – and the Red Devils were reportedly inclined to try again and lure him in this summer.

Umtiti has missed the majority of the current season due to a knee injury, playing in just 10 games for Barcelona so far.

But former United star Silvestre, 41 – who won four Premier League title at Old Trafford between 1999 and 2008 – believes that the centre-back is not the man Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be looking for.

And the Frenchman claims United already have a defender in their ranks they can rely on, Ivorian Eric Bailly, who has reportedly been shown the door in order to make space for a new centre-back.

Silvestre told “Man United will always look to sign players with the X-factor, but I don’t see Samuel Umtiti as necessarily a Manchester United player.

“I think Eric Bailly has all the qualities Man United need in defence but United will always target the best, so who knows who might come in and they will always look to strengthen the squad.

“For me the focus would be the midfield.”

United have been searching for a defensive addition for months, with £130million-rated Napoli ace Kalidou Koulibaly reportedly topping Solskjaer’s wish-list.

Although, the Red Devils are also understood to have been monitoring the situation of Norwich ace Ben Godfrey, available for a mere £10m.
