Black Panther wins best movie at SAG Awards making history as Lady Gaga and Olivia Colman both miss out on best actress gongs

BLACK Panther won the best movie cast gong at this year’s SAG Awards.

The Marvel movie made history as the first film from the comic book studio to win the prestigious award, but it wasn’t all celebratory as favourites Lady Gaga and Olivia Colman were pipped to the post by Glenn Close in the best actress category.

Star of Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman accepted the gong with the cast telling the audience how the movie had changed the industry for the better.

He said: “There are two things we have been asked doing this publicity tour, did we know that this movie was going to receive this kind of response, was it going to make a billion dollars and be around during awards season?

“And has it changed the industry? Has it actually changed the way the industry works?

“And my answer to that is…to be young, gifted and black.

“Because all of us up here know what it’s like to be told there is not a place for you to be featured even though you are young gifted and black.

“We know what it’s like to be the tail and not the head, to be beneath and not above and that is what we went to work with every day. We knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world.”

He added: “It’s a pleasure to be celebrated by you, to be loved by you. One thing I do know did it change the industry, you can’t have a Black Panther now without a 2 on it.”

In the individual categories Glenn Close was the surprise winner of the best dramatic actress award beating both favourites, Lady Gaga and Oliva Colman.
