On Thursday afternoon, Georgia Bureau of Investigation said they are treating the incident as a homicide.

The Rome News-Tribune identified the two women, who were reportedly found with bags over their heads, as sisters.

GBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brian Johnston told the Tribune that the women’s bodies were “apparently dropped over the (Etowah) bridge.”

The Tribune also reported that shotgun shells were discovered nearby – thought the GBI did not confirm these reports.

Crew with the Georgia Department of Transportation discovered the bodies while they were carrying out maintenance on the bridge, according to reports.

The cause of the women’s gruesome deaths remains under investigation, the GBI said, and the bureau is assisting the Rome Police Department with the case.

According to reports, it is still unanswered how long the victims were at the bridge, which is part of the East Rome Bypass.

Robinson was set to graduate from Armuchee High School in Rome next Saturday.

On Thursday, Floyd County Schools said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the news of the death of one of our students, Vanita Richardson who was scheduled to graduate next Saturday.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the Armuchee Community and her friends and family at this time.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Vanita will be remembered for being a fun-loving, humble, and motivated student who was making strong plans for her future.

Even throughout the school closures, Vanita’s passing is felt by all. In particular, the staff members whose lives she touched with her caring personality and big heart.”
