Bold bear sends family fleeing from restaurant table and then settles down to eat their burger

This is the incredible moment a bear sits down at a restaurant table and chows down on a diner’s burger.

In footage uploaded online, the animal can be seen calmly approaching the outdoor dining table at Sonney’s BBQ Shack in Lake Tahoe, California

It appears to take a seat as it eyes up a hamburger left behind by a frightened family who had run away and hid inside the restaurant.

Despite one man waving a red stool in its face, the bear – believed to be female – refuses to leave and calmly takes a bite out of the meal.

The video, recorded on August 16, was shared by a Reddit user.

Known only by their username Detective_Blunts, they said: ‘I was sitting inside at the bar when it happened.

‘The poor family jumped out of their seats and ran inside.’

According to the witness, this wasn’t the first time that this particular bear had caused havoc at the restaurant.

‘Waiters came over and scared the bear away but she was with her cubs. So she was determined to eat.’

Bear sightings are not uncommon in the tourist town of Lake Tahoe, and it appears that this particular Momma bear has been spotted regularly throughout the summer.

However, it is important that the bears don’t get too comfortable around humans and that people do their best to scare the bear away. As the waiters did in the video.

Reddit users reacted with typical humour to the video.

One user wrote: ‘He said the service was unbearable.’

Another remarked: ‘Such terrible customer service. That bear’s absolutely gonna leave a bad Yelp review.’

It comes after a large adult black bear and her three cubs visited a South Lake Tahoe beach in July, where they stunned beachgoers as they played in the water in close proximity.

The reason behind the beach encounter may have been illness, however, as experts revealed an increasing number of bears in the region are suffering from encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain.

The condition makes bears act more ‘dog-like’, becoming more friendly and fearless when encountering humans.

Since March 2020, at least four bears have been found with the disease in California, according to NBC News.
