Boris Johnson’s girlfriend Carrie Symonds claims she’s victim of smear campaign over claims she was booted from Tory job for fiddling expenses

BORIS Johnson’s Carrie Symonds has claimed she is the victim of a smear campaign after claims emerged she had been booted from her £80k Tory job after fiddling expenses.

The 31-year-old has today faced a string of allegations that she cost the party thousands in unauthorised expenses, and booked taxis under the names of junior staffers for her own use.

The Daily Mail also reported claims she had leaked damaging stories to Theresa May.

But while it was claimed she had been sacked for failing to lead her team properly – even failing to show up for work – friends have defended her.

And they said the allegations were sparked simply by her relationship with Brexiteer Boris Johnson, the frontrunner for No10.

A friend said last night: “This nonsense is a politically motivated smear by opponents of Brexit. Carrie is grateful for all the support she received while successfully campaigning against the release of serial rapist John Worboys during her time at CCHQ.

“A year later in a leadership contest it seems she is now the latest victim of Tory infighting with unnamed sources trying to hurt her simply because she is with Boris.”

Miss Symonds was claimed to have lost her job as director of communications at Tory HQ in August last year after poor performance.

And the reports also suggested she had disguised the number of taxis she had been taking by booking them under the names of junior staffers.

Her recent trip to Morocco also came under fire – with claims her holiday left her team understaffed – but it was later claimed it was for her 30th birthday and a party chief had been with her.

It is understood Miss Symonds, who now works in conservation, signed a non-disclosure agreement to not discuss the circumstances of her resignation.

She was reportedly paid £20,000 after demanding a six-month payoff of £40,000.

Miss Symonds and the Conservative Party HQ declined to comment.

BOJO AND CARRIE

Carrie has previously been praised for having the power to “take charge of Boris”.

But despite concerns she will have a major role in his political decisions, Johnson insisted it would only be him calling the shots at Downing Street.

Sources have said the Tory leadership hopeful wanted to marry his girlfriend “as soon as the time is right”.

This would mean Carrie would move into No10 with Boris Johnson should he grab the top job.

And their relationship was thrust into the spotlight after neighbours claimed they had heard shouting from their South London flat.

Johnson himself refused to answer questions about the row, saying: “I don’t think they want to hear that kind of thing”.

Just days after the leak they were spotted cosying up in a garden in the Sussex countryside.

Many have speculated that the snaps were staged to show a united front and save Boris’ bid for No10.

A friend played down the row and said the pair, who have a 24-year age gap between them, are still “very much in love”.
