Murphy was rushed to the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, but was later pronounced dead.
The incident reportedly unfolded after Bobby began threatening Murphy in their home.
Their mother, Shanty Hak, said Bobby suffers from mental health issues and had had a virtual appointment with his psychiatrist not long before.
She said he takes medication but that they are not always effective, and that he seemed unusually agitated that day.
Murphy was reportedly trying to help calm his brother down when Bobby went to the kitchen, picked up a knife, and moved towards him.
“I said ‘Murphy, run out of house’,” Shanty told KIRO7.
“He was panicked because he didn’t know what to do.”
Court documents reportedly state that Bobby at one point said something about “demons” before going after Murphy.
Shanty said she tried to intervene but that Bobby shoved past her and followed Murphy out onto the street.
She said that, once she was outside, she called out for help from neighbours, but that nobody arrived in time.
“By the time I reached to him, Murphy [was] already stabbed to death,” she said.
Murphy was a sixth-grade student at McKnight Middle School in Renton, where officials are now working to support classmates and teachers.
Neighbor Thomas Rountree arrived at the scene shortly after the attack and was the first person to call the emergency services.
“I got closer and I just seen all this blood,” he told KIRO7.
“It literally looked like the kid got into a shower and was just drenched in blood from head to toe.”
Footage from the scene showed paramedics tending to someone on the sidewalk while a shirtless man is dragged away by police officers.
Murphy’s aunt, Thu Carpenter, said the family had been left “absolutely heartbroken” by the death.
