THE Government is standing firm on Brexit negotiations – insisting its stance will not be changed despite EU demands to compromise.
The Prime Minister’s Official spokesman said: “We want to try and reach a free-trade agreement as soon as possible.
“But we have been clear that we won’t change our negotiating position and we have been clear what that position is.”
It comes as Angela Merkel told MEPs that failure to reach a post-Brexit trade deal would not set a good example as talks continued to thrash out a late agreement.
The German leader told MEPs: “We, Britain and the member states of the European Union are countries that are based on the same values, and it would not be a good example for the world if we didn’t, in the end, manage to craft an agreement.
The UK and EU will need to seal an arrangement by Saturday to have time to get it through their respective parliaments by the end of the year.
