Cambridge University medical textbook is branded ‘soft porn’

A university textbook has been branded ‘soft porn’ for using models in their underwear, including Page 3 girl’s Leilani Dowding and Jade Cartwright.

The medical text, titled Advanced Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics, also has the women in suggestive poses to explain the medical procedures.

They are dressed in bras and knickers, and in one photo a female model’s nipples can be seen through her crop top.

Meanwhile, men are dressed in shirts and ties in the textbook, which was published in November 2002 by Greenwich Medical Media.

Cambridge University Press acquired the book, along with the other publishing assets of GMM.

It was renamed as Examination Techniques in Orthopaedics for the 2014 edition.

Neurologist Kate Ahmed, based in Sydney, Australia tweeted images of the suggestive poses in the textbook, prompting a raft of angry responses.

She said ‘If you don’t think women in medicine have problems – check out the required textbook for orthopaedics at one Australian med school.’

Caroline Criado Perez commented: ‘Er…@CUPAcademic would you care to explain why you felt it necessary to include soft porn in this orthopaedics textbook?’

Dr Haley Jones replied saying: ‘I am speechless. This is so far beyond appalling.’

Evelyn Winters said: ‘My sister-in-law is a doctor. She wouldn’t go into orthopedics as it was such a male dominated field. We can see why!’

Kate Ahmed added: ‘The orthopaedics textbook highlights almost everything that plagues women in medicine.

‘The male doctor in an authoritarian and potentially exploitative role, the women as sexualised object.

‘And the “boys club” mentality that resorts to bonding over photos of attractive women.

‘One wonders two things after seeing these images – how would female patients feel comfortable with male surgeons after seeing their study material?

‘And how are female doctors supposed to train in an area where women are so blatantly objectified and demeaned?’

A spokeswoman from Cambridge University Press said: ‘We considered some of the images to be inappropriate and requested that the authors replace them ahead of a second edition, which we published in January 2014.

‘We accept that some of the images are still out of place given the subject matter.

‘A new, third edition is currently being prepared and the images will be reviewed again to ensure they are appropriate and relevant to the material – a medical textbook about the clinical examination of muscle, nerve and joint function.

‘To demonstrate examination techniques effectively the reader needs to be able to see skin, muscles and bony features where appropriate.

‘Photos of patients with the medical conditions under discussion are also used where appropriate.

‘The book is widely used and has been well reviewed in academic journals. It for this reason that a new edition is being produced.’
