Cardiff mother suffered a broken arm after her neighbour battered her with a baseball bat

A mum’s arm was broken after her angry neighbour attacked her with a baseball bat following a row over a lover.

Dominique Thomas, 28, victim of the attack, was targeted by her neighbour Jessica Verallo, 29, and it was caught on a doorbell camera.

Ms Thomas was in the garden with her daughter Ruby, who is four, when her neighbour began shouting abuse at her.

Her neighbour called Ruby an ‘ugly ginger c***’ in an abusive rant which erupted days after she was asked politely to stay away from Ms Thomas’s boyfriend.

The ‘ticking timebomb’ assault then erupted further moments later as Ms Verallo advanced on Ms Thomas with a baseball bat, breaking her arm.

Ms Thomas, from St Fagans, Cardiff, said: ‘She had something in her hand that she was swinging back and forth.

‘I realised it was a metal baseball bat and the look of evil on her face as she stormed towards me was terrifying.’

The baseball attack happened as terrified children in the street looked on and Ms Thomas said: ‘Stop it, please. There are kids here.’

Police later seized the footage of the assault, which was caught on a neighbour’s doorbell camera.

Ms Thomas said: ‘All I could do was watch helplessly as she began swinging the baseball bat at me.

‘I stumbled backwards and fell into a bush. As Jessica came at me with a full swing of the bat I managed to raise my arm to stop her hitting my head.

‘I felt a bone snap in my arm. It was agony. Then bright red blood oozed out and spurted everywhere.’

Ms Thomas was taken to hospital after the assault and had three hours of surgery where doctors had to put six screws and a metal plate into her arm.

In the days leading up to the attack, Ms Thomas had discovered that Ms Verallo had chatted up her boyfriend Connor Knapton.

She said she was not happy about what her neighbour had done but had decided not to make a ‘big scene’.

Ms Thomas said she had asked her neighbour to stay away from Mr Knapton via text.

She said Ms Verallo denied making a pass at her partner but then started ‘screaming’ at her days after.

Prosecutor Roger Griffiths said police recovered the doorbell video and used it to arrest Ms Verallo, a ‘ticking timebomb.’

Since the brutal attack, Ms Thomas has said she is living in fear and struggling to sleep.

She said: ‘I am still living in the flat where the attack happened but I am hoping to move. I really don’t want to live here anymore.

‘I still have dreams and horrible flashbacks of that day. I don’t think until the day I die I can forget it.

‘I am glad I’ve had some justice and Jessica Verallo is in jail and can’t hurt anyone else.’
