Channel 4 newsreader Cathy Newman claims she was sexually harassed at £40,000-a-year school

CHANNEL 4 newsreader Cathy Newman has claimed she was sexually harassed while studying at a top private school.

She said she was just 16 at the time, and had won a scholarship to the £40,000-a-year Charterhouse school in Surrey.

Ms Newman revealed on one occasion a boy sat next to her at lunch “unzipped his flies and grabbed my hand and forced me to touch his penis”, but never talked about it for years.

During the alleged harassment in the early 1990s, she said boys would spray her with water to get her clothes wet.

The 44-year-old now says she regrets not telling anyone about her bullies.

She told the Sunday Times: “Now we’ve got online abuse and the [concern] about someone taking a naked photo… how much worse it would have been if it had been filmed and put out [online].

“Some of the things that went on at that school, I would now describe as sexual harassment.

“I don’t know why I didn’t report them at the time.”

The newsreader also said boys used to rate the small amount of girls admitted to the school’s sixth form on their looks when they walked into the chapel.

But she added the experiences aided her career as a journalist – in which she has criticised sexism in Government.

Her father was a teacher at the school, which she said made her an “easier target”, as did the fact she had got in on a scholarship.

The mum-of-two has decided to speak out as kids go back to school for a new term, after revealing what happened to her for the first time only last year.

Charterhouse has turned out other reporters including David Dimbleby and Max Hastings.

A spokesman there told the newspaper the school had not been aware of the allegations and had reported them to police.

The Sun Online have approached Surrey Police for comment.

Earlier this year Channel 4 hired security experts to protect Ms Newman after she received threats following on from a fiery interview with a radical academic.

The broadcaster grilled Professor Jordan Peterson, including on the top of the pay gap, and was subjected to a barrage of abuse on social media.
