Channel 4 viewers left with blank screens as ‘technical problem’ forces broadcaster off air

Viewers were left frustrated this evening after Channel 4 was taken off air earlier over what bosses described as a ‘technical fault’.

Thousands of people reported issues with the main channel, Channel 5 and subsidiaries including e4, 4more, 4film and 4music on popular website downdetector.com.

Images shared online showed flailing TV signals showing no picture, a black flashing screen with no noise and programmes cutting in and out at around 7pm.

Others reported seeing a ‘black and green’ flickering screen as one viewer compared the scene to a ZX Spectrum loading screen.

A white holding screen was displayed after the end of the scheduled Formula One qualifying session highlights on the main channel at 7pm, which read: ‘Whisper West, for Channel 4 Television.’

It is not clear if the disruption has ended on all channels yet.

Channel 4 confirmed on their official Twitter account: ‘Channel 4 and More 4 are currently off air due to a technical problem.

‘We are working to restore them as quickly as possible.’

Sharing their dismay on Twitter, several viewers reported issues and bemoaned the fact their favourite programmes weren’t displaying correctly.

@Rayatthegrays asked: ‘And now Channel4 frozen as well. What on earth is going on?’

Another confused fan queried: ‘Is it just me or has Film4 hung on the last movie credits for the last 30 minutes?’

@Seekqueen wrote: ‘A lot of channels are effected by whatever is going on.’
