Christian Wilkins speaks out against homophobic abuse at the Melbourne Cup

Richard Wilkins’ son Christian has spoken out after a man called him a‘f**king f*g’ at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old model and socialite told 9Honey that while the abuse wasn’t new, it did shock him due to how ‘blatant’ it was.

‘To be honest, looking how I do, dressing how I do, I occasionally get people calling things out,’he said. ‘But I was most shocked at the blatant and arrogant manner he was addressing me.’

‘Realistically, a man calling a young gay man a “f*g” isn’t a new thing, and truthfully I’m one of the lucky ones – there are gay men around the world being killed over their sexuality,’ he added.

While attending the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday, Christian revealed on Instagram that a man had verbally abused him.

He shared a photo of the person responsible, writing in the caption: ‘I’m not one to usually call people out but this man called me a “f**king f*g” who should “go the f**k back home” now three times.’

Christian said he publicly shamed the man because he wanted to use his public platform to call out the abuse.

‘The reason I wanted to call him out was to make sure people realised that it isn’t okay, it’s not something we should have to get over, and we as a community aren’t just going to sulk away because you don’t want us there,’ he told 9Honey.

Christian came out publicly in the March issue of Cosmopolitan magazine.
