Corbyn blasts defectors for quitting to ‘sit with disaffected Tory MPs’

Jeremy Corbyn has blasted eight defectors from Labour for allying with ‘disaffected Tory MPs’ and warned new rebels not to join the ‘politics of the past’.

In a social media message to his followers last night Mr Corbyn branded the new Independent Group a ‘return to the failed business as usual’.

Mr Corbyn pleaded with Jewish people to believe he was an ‘ally’ against abuse after the rebel MPs accused him of letting Labour become ‘institutionally anit-Semitic’.

Friends of Mr Corbyn, including Unite leader Len McCluskey, have played down anti-Semitism in Labour despite the furious criticisms from the defecting MPs.

The video will fuel anger from Labour MPs about Mr Corbyn’s response to the latest crisis amid warnings up to 50 more could quit the party in protest against him.

In the clip, Mr Corbyn said: ‘Our labour movement is greater than the sum of our parts. We’re at our best when we work together.

‘It’s disappointing that some MPs have left our party to sit with disaffected Tory MPs. But we cannot return to the failed business as usual politics of the past.’

He added these MPs now want to ‘abandon the policies on which they were elected, so the decent thing for them to do is to resign and put themselves up for election’.

Addressing Britons Jews, Mr Corbyn added: ‘I say again to the Jewish people both in our party and across the country: we are your ally in the fight against anti-Semitism.

‘Labour is the only party with a deep rooted history of combatting racism.’

Mr Corbyn’s own deputy Tom Watson has refused to criticise the splinter group, saying only their move was ‘premature’ and warning Mr Corbyn to change if he wanted to avoid more defections.

But a Labour spokesman slammed the eight MPs yesterday for forming an ‘establishment coalition’ in a signal the warnings to Mr Corbyn have fallen on deaf ears.

Enfield North MP Joan Ryan followed last night, and said: ‘We never had this problem in the party before he was the leader. It comes with him, it is part of his politics I am afraid

‘Labour should be the bulwark against that – against the hard right and their views. Instead of that, inside Labour it is perpetuating anti-Semitism.’
