Coronavirus LIVE updates: Boris Johnson in intensive care as UK deaths jump by 439 and fatalities pass 5,000

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been admitted to intensive care with coronavirus symptoms.

Since Sunday evening, the Prime Minister has been in St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent coronavirus symptoms.

A spokesperson for No.10 said: “Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.

“The PM has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary.

“The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication.”

It comes as positive cases have now reached 51,608 — up from 47,806 yesterday — as Britain continues to be gripped by Covid-19.

But the coronavirus lockdown could end by June as experts warn businesses won’t survive past then.

The restriction is to be ended in stages and civil servants have been tasked with drawing up a staggered release so Britain can go back to normal.

It comes after Treasury officials warned if the lockdown went beyond June the Government would not be able to stop normally successful businesses going under.
