LIFTING Covid restrictions is “a gamble” and must be delayed say experts as Brits hit beaches & parks this weekend despite rising cases.
It means the number of infections has increased by 40% after 2,439 cases were recorded this time last week.
Professor Ravi Gupta, a member of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), warned the UK was in the grip of an “early” third wave of Covid-19 infections.
Speaking to ITV News, Mr Gupta said ministers should consider delaying the plan to scrap Covid rules “by a few weeks”, adding any lift was “a gamble that I don’t think this country should be taking”.
The warning came as people packed out beaches, parks, pubs and attractions to soak up bank holiday temperatures of 25C.
The spread of the more transmissible Indian variant has cast fresh doubt over whether the June 21 lockdown lift can go ahead – despite the success of the vaccination programme.
Brits will learn the next steps of the roadmap to freedom on June 14.
