THOUSANDS have defied the Government and fled the capital after Boris Johnson cancelled Christmas for millions in the South East, sparking fury.
Those living in London, the South East and East were plunged into a new Tier 4 at midnight last night in an eleventh hour U-turn.
Dramatic pictures showed long queues of traffic leaving the city along with packed train stations as people attempt to avoid the brutal new restrictions.
Under the new highest level tier, travel and different households mixing will be banned, said Boris Johnson at a press conference yesterday.
The decision was made after it was revealed a new strain of Covid-19 ripping through large parts of the South was 70 per cent more contagious.
It’s thought the new strain – called VUI202012/01 – emerged in London and the South East as early as September, Sir Patrick Vallance said at a Downing Street briefing.
Overall Covid cases have more than doubled, as data shows a sharp increase in hospital admissions across London and the South.
