Coronavirus UK LIVE news: ‘Pubs may have to close again for schools to reopen’ as global death toll passes 700,000

Pubs may have to close again to allow schools to reopen in September, according to Professor Neil Ferguson.

The ex-SAGE adviser said evidence shows teenagers transmit coronavirus as much as adults, and that opening up later in the year would cause the R rate to shoot up by as much as 0.5.

He warned secondary school pupils may have to go back part-time, leisure centres could have to close and people may have to stay at home rather than going back to the office to stop the spread.

It comes as the global death toll has now passed 700,000 – meaning the bug is killing one person every 15 seconds.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus death toll rose to 46,299, bringing the total number of cases to 306, 293.
