Coronavirus UK news – Landlords’ fury at local lockdowns as NHS waiting lists soar to record highs

UK coronavirus cases have jumped by a quarter in just 24 hours, reaching 17,540 today.

Cases have nearly tripled in two weeks with 561,815 testing positive for the bug in total in Britain.

Another 77 more deaths were also confirmed today, bringing Britain’s overall Covid-19 death toll to 42,592.

Boris Johnson is now expected to announce further restrictions for England shortly, which could see pubs and restaurants in the worst-affected areas facing full or partial closure.

Scientists are warning that coronavirus has a ‘gun to the head’ of the country, with a health minister suggesting hospitals could be swamped in 10 days unless the government steps up its response.

SAGE experts met today to demand the Prime Minister gets even tougher and impose a nationwide ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown – despite Boris Johnson already facing a backlash from the North over plans to shut pubs and restaurants in hotspots.

A swathe of the North is set to be plunged deeper into lockdown next week after the premier signed off a new ‘traffic light’ system of local curbs for England.
