Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson blasts social media trolls who racially abused Wilfried Zaha

ROY HODGSON has blasted the social media trolls who abused his Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha.

The Eagles winger, 25, took to Instagram on Tuesday to reveal he had suffered racist abuse and death threats to his family after being awarded a late penalty in Sunday’s draw with Arsenal.

Palace yesterday reported Zaha’s complaint to campaign group Kick It Out, who said: “It is concerning players are still being abused like this. It should not be happening in 2018.”

And after last night’s Carabao Cup loss at Middlesbrough, Eagles boss Hodgson admitted: “I don’t have any sympathy for people who use these platforms to abuse other people.

“I don’t think there are many people out there, apart from the odd Twitter troll who knows no better, who believe that racially abusing or threatening people is the right way to go.

“As far as Wilf is concerned, the club will do everything they can to support him.

“All our sympathy is with our player and the club will do everything we can to help him get through the situation.”

There have been calls for the police and social media platforms to do more to prevent online abuse.

But Hodgson added: “I am a football manager and I can’t be expected to pontificate on everything.

“I will have to leave this wider philosophical and social issue to other people.”

Zaha missed last night’s tie at the Riverside with a shoulder injury he picked up against Arsenal, but Hodgson insists he will be fine for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea.
