DANNY Baker has told how he was shot in the bum by a gun-toting West Ham fan near the Virgin Radio studios in London.

The 61-year-old star was appearing on pal Chris Evans‘ show at The News Building in London Bridge, near where Danny once lived, when he told the startling story.

He explained: “Where we are now is where I grew up. I was shot not a quarter of a mile from here by some West Ham supporters.

“I was shot twice – one of them in the rump – just across the road from here, in about 1975.”

Danny added: “All the pubs over here used to stay open late, because they were dockers’ pubs. They were terrible old boozers – absolutely depressed.”

He joked: “Imagine Radio 2, that’s what they were like.”

“I came out about 2 in the morning with 11 of my friends, walking down Tooley Street. It was quite a dark street and a car went by and I heard – clap.”

Adding that he’d taken a silver slug to the leg, the radio and I’m A Celeb star explained: “I yelled out: ‘I’ve been shot.’ There was a lot of blood from my knee.

“This car sped off down Jamaica Road. My mates thought it was the funniest thing in the world. It must have been West Ham supporters used to drive around here looking for trouble.

“I pulled it out and I’m bleeding. But what I didn’t notice is there’s a roundabout just by the Rotherhithe Tunnel here and they’d turned round and were coming back up the other side of the road.

“Everyone’s gathered around me. I’m doubled over pulling this thing out of my knee, my rump is towards the road – it’s a big target Chris – and they got me again.”

A startled Chris, 53, replied: “I’ve known you for years and you’ve never told me that story.”

Speaking about how his childhood stomping ground has been transformed, Danny told listeners: “You can’t imagine where we are.

“It’s an absolute glass cathedral – the most modern building in the world.”
