A source told the paper: “Boris appreciates the fact that while the rest of the Cabinet sat on their hands over the deal, David did the honourable thing.”

He is said to want to become chancellor or foreign secretary, rather than any lesser role.

Meanwhile, it is thought that Jeremy Hunt will stay in the cabinet, with Iain Duncan Smith a contender for deputy PM.

The paper also said Matt Hancock could become chancellor and Jacob Rees-Mogg chief secretary to the Treasury.

Davis recently opened up about this battle to find a cure for his little granddaughter, Chloe.

The five-year-old lives with a very rare, incurable genetic disorder called Syngap1 syndrome.

He’s now dedicating his time to finding a cure for his little granddaughter.

He plans to make his own donation to help fund research at the Patrick Wild Centre at Edinburgh University.

He told the Mail: “I won the lottery of life. Chloe, though, didn’t even get a ticket.”
