Yet it seems this summer he is set to put the record straight and snub the La Liga giants.

De Gea is set to sign a new five-year deal at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old apparently made his mind up during the World Cup whilst representing Spain.

After he was criticised by Spain fans for not being up to his usual standard.

Manchester United team-mate Ander Herrera has revealed De Gea’s mindset ahead of his return for pre-season training next week.

Herrera went on to say: “We have, I think, the biggest amount of fans in the world.”

“They are very loyal. They have already shown that to him and he knows he’s going to get them back.”

“I remember that difficult summer when everyone was talking about Real Madrid and he played the first game at Old Trafford and everyone was singing his name.”

“He told me ‘this is amazing – they are the best’.”

Herrera added: “We are very, very relaxed because he is going to show again that he is the best in the world and he will give us eight or 10 points again this season.”

“He’s the best keeper I’ve ever seen in my life and he is with us so we have more chances to win titles. He is so, so strong. I remember when I was in Spain and he signed for the club.”

“The first couple of months were hard for him and he became the best goalkeeper in the world in the next four years.”
