Donald Trump warns Iran leader Hassan Rouhani of ‘consequences few have ever suffered’

DONALD Trump issued a warning to Iran saying it would “suffer consequences the like of which few have suffered before” after criticism from its leader.

The US President told premier Hassan Rouhani: “Never, ever threaten the United States again” and warned him “be cautious” as tensions grow between the two nations.

It comes after Rouhani cautioned Trump about his hostile policies against Tehran.

The Iranian president believes there has been efforts by Washington to destabilise Iran’s Islamic government.

And he said on Sunday said “war with Iran is the mother of all wars”.

Trump hit back on Twitter, in a savage rant written in all capital letters.

He said: “Never, ever threaten the United States again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before.

He added: “Be cautious!”

Trump withdrew in May from the 2015 nuclear deal designed to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Tehran has said its nuclear work is just for electricity generation and other peaceful projects.

But on Sunday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, opened a war of words when he compared Iran to a “mafia”.

Speaking in California, he said Iranian leaders had benefited from bribes and embezzlement.

He described two Iranian foreign ministers who brokered the nuclear deal with the US and five other countries as “polished front men for the ayatollahs international con artistry.”

Rouhani replied to Pompeo’s comments by saying: “You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran’s security and interests.”

This sparked a furious response from Trump.

Publicly, the Trump administration says its policy with Iran is not “regime change,” but to change Tehran’s behaviour so it stops nuclear and missile work, support for proxies in the Middle East and backing of militant groups.
