Ex-hairdresser MP says Boris Johnson has been dyeing his hair

Boris Johnson tonight rejected as ‘outrageous’ claims that he dyes his famous blond hair.

Tory MP David Morris, a former hairdresser who has been a critic of Mr Johnson, said the green tinge in photos of the leadership front runner on stage suggested he had been ‘evening out’ the colour.

A celebrity stylist also told MailOnline he could be using ‘ash toner’ to ‘clean up’ his hair.

Mr Johnson, 55, has previously sparked speculation about how he maintains his trademark mane.

In 2016 he said in a magazine interview that he dyed his hair. However, he later insisted he had been joking.

But asked about his shaggy coiffure at the hustings tonight he said: ‘No, never. I don’t usually answer personal questions but it is an outrageous suggestion.’

Mr Johnson has been on stage in a flurry of hustings for the Tory leadership over recent weeks. He is the hot favourite to win the contest against Jeremy Hunt next week.

But Mr Morris, who ran a chain of hairdressing salons before entering politics, told MailOnline he had noticed that Mr Johnson’s hair had taken on a green tint.

Experts highlight Boris’s hair colour

Tory MP David Morris, who ran a chain of hairdressing salons before entering politics, told MailOnline he had noticed that Boris Johnson’s hair had taken on a green tint under stage lights.

‘There are various reasons why these pictures show his hair as green,’ the MP, who supports Mr Hunt for leader, said.

‘Most blond men in their 50s are 60-70 per cent grey – myself included.

‘A synthetic rinse will show up green under fluorescent lights – that’s why hairdressing salons do not have this type of lighting.

‘You see it all the time in the House of Commons chamber if you know what you’re looking for.’

Celebrity hairstylist James Johnson said lighting could be to blame – or Mr Johnson could be using ‘ash toner’.

‘It could also cause speculation whether an ash toner has been used to neutralise the warmth in blonde hair,’ he said.

‘It could also cause speculation whether an ash toner has been used to neutralise the warmth in blonde hair,’ he said.

‘Ash is blue, placed upon yellow normally to bring the colour to a ‘’cleaner’’ blonde. However if the hair is too yellow, the ash can cause the hair to go khaki as yellow and blue make green.’

The stylist added that a build up of chlorine and copper minerals in the water and copper piping can also cause hair to discolour.

He added: ‘You can use filtering products like ColorWow Dream Filter that remove the minerals from water in the hair, returning the hair to the desired colour.

‘One example is Love Island… the chlorine makes the girls’ extensions go orange. Dream Filter works in a way that it magnetises the minerals built up in the hair from the water, removing the pigmented minerals and returning the hair back to the colour it should be.’

Mr Johnson has had a dramatic makeover over the past year as he geared up for a bid to take over from Theresa May.

The former London mayor has lost weight, smartened up his suits and tamed his tousled locks to a certain extent.

His girlfriend Carrie Symonds has been widely credited with the would-be PM’s sharper image.

In an interview with the Sunday Times magazine in 2016, Mr Johnson was quoted as saying of his hair: ‘This is the real thing, it’s all natural.’

But when he was asked whether he dyed it, he admitted, ‘Yes.’

Mr Johnson later insisted he had been joking.

In the summer of 2015, hairdresser Heinz Schumi claimed his hair was bleached.

However, his journalist sister Rachel Johnson has backed his claim that he does not use dye.

‘All Johnsons are natural blondes!’ she tweeted in 2016.
