Explosion near hotel in Stockholm leaves five people injured

An explosion near a hotel in northwest Stockholm has left five people injured.

Police are investigating the cause of the blast at an industrial area of Vallingby in Sweden’s capital in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Three people were given on-site medical care while two were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

A horrified witness who was sleeping in the hotel as the explosion occurred said that the windows smashed throughout the building.

Sami Hautala, who lives in the hotel, said he was startled awake at around 1.00am by a loud crack and the sound of glass hitting the ground outside.

He said: ‘I was lying in shock. It was like the whole house had been relieved from the ground and I couldn’t place myself in the room. It was a very insecure feeling,’ he told Expressen TV.

Describing the scene, the local added: ‘When you look up here, you only see windows that have broken everywhere.’

Another witness reported a ‘loud bang and a screaming sound’.

The surrounding area has been cordoned off and bomb technicians are said to be investigating the site.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing over Stockholm this morning, with police saying the blast caused significant damage to cars, homes and businesses in the area.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known but it is not being treated as suspicious.

No arrests have been made and the blast was not believed to be terror-related.
