From Ant McPartlin’s new ink to Selena Gomez’s semi-colon… these are the secret messages behind the stars’ inspirational tattoos

ANT McPartlin has revealed his new Alcoholics Anonymous tattoo on a double date night with his new love Anne-Marie Corbett, best pal Declan Donnelly and his pregnant wife, Ali Astall.

But the TV presenter, 42, isn’t the first celeb to have an inking with a very special meaning as these stars show.

The symbol seems to be the AA logo, a popular way for those going though recovery to remind themselves and others about their journey.

“Some people find it helpful to mark their recovery from a physical or mental health problem in one way or another, as it can help with their feelings of self-esteem or confidence,” says Stephen Buckley, spokesperson for Mind.

“Tattoos often have a strong personal connection and might represent someone’s own experience of a mental or physical health problem or their recovery from it.”

Many celebrities like Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have had similar symbols or words etched into their skin and there are several well-known inkings dedicated to raising awareness about a mental health issue, or as a way to encourage others to talk about theirs.

The semi-colon

The meaning behind the semi-colono tattoo is said to be a symbol of someone who chose ‘continue on’ with their life despite mental health struggles.

Selena Gomez and the stars of 13 Reasons Why stars took to Instagram to reveal their semi-colon tattoos to raise awareness of suicide, due to the subject matter of their show.

“Through raising public awareness, educating communities, and equipping every person with the right tools, we know we can save lives,” says a spokesperson for The Semi Colon project, an organisation dedicated to raising suicide awareness.

Serotonin is the neurotransmitter in the brain that is usually known as the ‘mood-regulator’, that contributes to happiness.

The chemical symbol has become a popular inking for many as a way to symbolise living with depression or other mental health problems.

CBB’s Jeremy McConnell had his inked after being released from prison with sources suggesting it was a way to symbolise him “moving on with his life”.

Inspirational words

Singer Demi Lovato got “Stay Strong” tattooed on her wrists in 2011 after completing her stint in rehab – and even used an image of the words as the opening to her documentary about her journey.

The 25-year-old has several tattoos dedicated to her recovery from addiction, recently adding the word “free” to her hand.

The film star revealed her tattoo on the Ellen Show[/caption]

Lindsay Lohan, 32, revealed her white ‘breathe’ tattoo on The Ellen Show in 2007.

The message behind this popular tattoo or the similarly popular ‘inhale/exhale’ tattoo is pretty obvious but for many, it’s a reminder to just ‘breathe’ through any problems.

It’s also said to be to remind the person to have a moment of calm during their day.

Lady Gaga had this tattoo along with the other survivors of sexual assault, after performing with them onstage at the 2016 Academy Awards.

Designed by illustrator Jackqueline Lin, the Fire Rose Unity Survivor tattoo (its full name), has now become a huge movement.

“It is a unity symbol inspired by the loops of our DNA structure and our universal infinity sign,” she revealed.

  1. I’ve seen a few spoken interviews of her and personally her personality hasn’t annoyed me nor has she come across as stupid. I think some people are reading far too much into the comments she supposedly said and making judgements that are unfair. Tom I’m not really sure what you’re on about talking about having a right to be an actor and when it comes to Hollywood approaching people I was just wondering what your sources are unless Tom H is short for Tom Hanks.
