Before becoming a frontline nurse during COVID…

…Jay Mejia enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

While enlisted, he worked on the USAF’s largest aircraft, the C-5 Galaxy.
Tonight, I received the following text from a Chiver…

…a fellow friend that worked with Jay on the C-5s…

While coming home from the hospital, late at night on Christmas Eve…a drunk driver jumped the median…causing an 18-wheeler to crash and end Jay Mejia’s life.

During Jay Mejia’s life time,
the Veteran worked with C-5 Galaxy crews in San Antonio.

He was tasked with delivering needed food and resources to humans in Afghanistan.

THEN, he battled the Global Pandemic at home.
From Penny Morin, Mejia’s sister:
“He was one of a kind.
He worked very, very hard to get his nursing degree and he wanted to serve his community by helping people.”

At 33-years old, he leaves behind his wife and 2 sons
(Jayden 7-yrs and Jayse 10-month old).
From Monica Ramos, Jay’s sister:
“His sons were his absolute world. He was so passionate about those boys. So, we can only try to reassure them that their father loved them.”

Christmas Eve from Jay’s (other) sister, Monica Ramos:
“Jayden (7-yr. old) was very excited.
He knew daddy was coming for him, and he was excited. His mom said he was ready, he was ready to spend the day with daddy and it was sad to hear that she had to sit him down and let him know that he wasn’t going to come today.”

Jay Mejia’s brother, James, talking about a Christmas gift he was excited to give:
“He kept saying, ‘I got something for you. You’re going to love it’
…And still, right now,
I don’t even know what he was talking about.”

From sister-in-law, Maria Mejia:
“(Jay was) Somebody that was Serving their country,
somebody who was serving sick people, the community.
Always serving and helping others.
That’s what you (drunk driver) took-away from this world that we live in today;
where we need people like my brother in law.”

From his wife, Maria Mejia, after two decades of going from life-long friends to marriage:
“This is what we’re going to miss the most;
We always knew that we could COUNT ON HIME BEING HERE. And we loved him being here.”
