Editor’s Note: If you’re not up to date on Game of Thrones, turn back now!! This post is dark and full of spoilers.
HBO So we’re two episodes away from the credits rolling on Game of Thrones for the last time, and things are slowly coming together. Kinda. Pieces are moving to where they should be, key people are on their way to the final battle against the Mad Queen Cersei, and we’ve had enough death to last a lifetime. From here, it seems like anyone’s game, except for Dany’s. She’s got a bit a bit of a problem going into episode 5.
She’s down 2 dragons. So much for being the “Mother of Dragons.” But if this recent rumour is true, we might be getting more fire breathing mayhem than we ever planned for, and it’ll be glorious.
Instagram/pilauasbaek Actually, it’s a little more of a rumour, and more of a behind the scenes tease from a cast member. According to Pilou Asbaek’s (aka. Euron Greyjoy) Instagram, there might be dragons on the horizon. Writing “Gone with the wind….!!!? Maybe…. can’t wait for episode 5….there will be light! And death…. and coffee cups… Oreos…?…you might see a dragon…or two…or none…”, he seems to be hinting at more scaly shenanigans.
Now it could all be a joke and he’s just goofing around. Or he might be onto something.
There might be more dragons out there. God knows, she’ll need them.
HBO Dany and her dragons have been closely intertwined since the finale of season 1, when she hatched the gift of the 3 eggs. Naming them Dragon, Rhaegal and Viserion, she raised them, fought with them and nurtured them.
From seasons 2-7, she was a force to be reckoned with. At least, until her dragons were proven to be mortal.
First, Viserion was taken out by the Night King during the Wight Hunt beyond the Wall.
He was reanimated as a wight and was the personal mount of the Night King, until his death at Arya’s hand.
Then, most recently, we saw the injured Rhegal get taken out by several scorpion bolts, fired by Euron Greyjoy.
He too is down for the count, leaving Drogon as the sole dragon of the House of Targaryen, and probably in all of the known world. Except that might not be entirely true.
HBO There’s actually a lot of ways that more dragons could appear in Westros, under the control of the Targaryens. If you go back into the books, there’s the idea that dragons aren’t gendered. We’ve all assumed that Dany’s three dragons were brothers, but acceding to George R.R. Martin “”Dragons are neither male nor female, but now one and now the other, as changeable as flame.” .
Plus, the House of Targaryen doesn’t really have much qualms about
HBO Given that, there’s a good chance that during that period of time in season 5, where Jorah and Tyrion saw Drogon flying over Valyria, s/he might have been there to lay eggs, after being impregnated by a sibling. After all, it is the ancient home of the dragonlords.
Imagine that during that time Drogon had a litter and they’ve been growing ever since. They’d be pretty big by now, and ready to lay waste to Westros.
While this might seem like the most popular theory, there’s also another: the Winterfell Crypts.
HBO According to some supporting books written by George R. R. Martin ( The World of Ice and Fire & Fire and Blood), a court Jester named Mushroom used to tell a story about an ancient Targaryen dragon named Vermax, who laid eggs in the Winterfell crypts.
Given that the crypts were teased heavily prior to the start of season 8, and the fact that the Night King was marching this way, lends some credence to the idea. On the negative side, if there are indeed eggs still there, they haven’t hatched yet and even if they did, they’d be too young to make a difference.
Unless she’s got more of that old blood magic to make them grow, or something.
HBO There’s also the obvious theory; we were told that the 3 eggs Daenerys got for her wedding were the only ones. But where’s the proof? We’re just taking that at its word, but what if there’ve always been dragons cruising around Essos and surrounding areas, and we just haven’t found them yet? Essos is a pretty big place.
Imagine if somehow Dany could call to these flocks of dragons and have them attack King’s Landing. That’d be a beautiful orgy of fire and revenge.
Based on this scene in the teaser for episode 5, things don’t look so good for Euron.
Is that a dragon screech I hear? Let’s hope.
