George Best’s ex-wife Alex, 47, arrives at court to face drink-driving charge

George Best’s ex-wife Alex has admitted drink-driving at court today after crashing into another vehicle near her Surrey home last month.

Ms Best, 47, dressed in a black blazer and black trousers, appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court this morning and pleaded guilty to the charges.

She was treated for cuts and bruises by paramedics at the scene near her home in Kingswood, Surrey.

The court heard Best’s breathalyser reading was 106 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath – just over three times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes.

On the day of the crash, it was reported she had spent part of the day with former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik.

She had previously denied being romantically involved with Mr Opik in 2017 after he was dumped by lawyer girlfriend Sabina Vankova, 35, just months after she gave birth to their child when he spent the night at Ms Best’s home following a trip to the pub.

Prosecutor Darren Matravers said a two-vehicle collision took place at about 8pm and he said no-one was injured.

He said a second call was made to police after concerns about whether one of the drivers was ‘intoxicated or not’.

Mr Matravers said Best, behind the wheel of a Mini Clubman, was ‘just over three times the legal limit’.

In mitigation, Robin Falvey said: ‘She is a person who never drinks and drives.’

He said she has ‘never been in trouble before’.

Mr Falvey said Best had been shopping when she received a phone call from a friend who invited her to come and join them in a pub.

He said she had ‘what she described as spritzers’, adding: ‘She realised that she should not drive.’

Mr Falvey pointed out that it was the day of the Grand National and he said Best spent a ‘considerable amount of time’ trying to get a cab, adding that a friend tried too.

‘That is when she made the bad mistake and drove,’ he said.

Mr Falvey said that when the collision took place, both drivers stopped and exchanged details.

He pointed out that it was Best who contacted police initially.

‘She was the one that put her head in the lion’s mouth,’ he said.

He added: ‘It was this defendant who phoned the police. She reported the fact there was an accident.’

Mr Falvey said Best then stopped a car and got the driver to park in front of her to alert other road users.

It was at this point it is believed a second call was made to police to raise concerns about Best.

Mr Falvey said she co-operated throughout and underwent all tests.

‘She is absolutely devastated by what has happened,’ he said, adding that the consequences will have a ‘huge impact’ on her life.

He said she lives in a remote area and will have to sell the cottage she lives in.

Mr Falvey said Best is unemployed but pointed out that a man sitting at the back of the courtroom is writing a play about George Best and she is a script editor on it.

MailOnline has contacted Mr Opik’s representatives for comment.

Ms Best was married to the former Manchester United legend Mr Best for nine years before they divorced in 2004.

She claimed after his death in 2005 that the footballer had been violent towards her.

In 2017 Mr Opik, 54, was given an embarrassing dressing down by his ex Sabina Vankova during a furious rant on Twitter over him staying the night at Ms Best’s home.

Ms Vankova wrote: ‘Just ended the relationship with Lembit Opik. The woman with whom he spent Monday night can have him now all for herself.’

But Ms Best later denied that that she has ever been romantically involved with him.

Following the 2017 row she said they had been ‘friends for 13 years’ after meeting at a Great Ormond Street Hospital event but that he was ‘not her type’.

Reports at the time suggested the friendship ‘put a strain’ on his relationship with Ms Vankova.

She was also sent pictures of Mr Opik ‘nuzzling Ms Best’s breasts’ while the pair were on holiday in Marrakech in 2016.

Speaking to The Sun at the time, Ms Vankova said: ‘I couldn’t believe it when I got the pictures. He’s always claimed they were just friends but I have had my suspicions. This picture shows their friendship has crossed a line.’

She added: ‘I confronted him and he told me they’d been with another couple messing about on the loungers. He claims that other people had had similar pictures with Alex, but I just don’t believe that.’

But the couple reconciled and spent another year together before splitting.

Ms Best and Mr Opik – who previously dated Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia – have been pictured on nights out together in London and have also shared holidays together.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said last month in a statement: ‘Alexandra Best, 47, of Kingswood in Surrey, has been charged with driving a motor vehicle while above the legal alcohol limit following a minor collision in Waterhouse Lane, Kingswood in the early evening of 6 April 2019.’
