Nerds and Wellness
Growing up, there were two camps of kids in my neighbourhood; the ones that played outside and played sports, and the ones that stayed inside and played video games. Back then, we figured the odds of which kids were gonna get hurt more often, erred on the side of those that were outside doing physical things. Boy, were we wrong. As it turns out, gaming is far more dangerous than we know.
Between the general fights that can break out over who’s turn it is and what rules you’re sticking to, gaming takes an
actual physical toll on you and can fuck you up permanently.
I think it’s time to put my controller down and go play outside, it seems safer.
3D Optical Disorder You know how your mom always told you if you sit too close to the tv, you’d go blind? This is sort of like that, but worse. It’s been revealed that the old-school 3D graphics from our childhood had a corrosive effect on our retinas.
Basically, if you had a Nintendo Virtual Boy or SEGA VR growing up, you’re probably suffering from eye-twitching, blurred vision and partial blindness, because those early pieces of tech, fried the fuck out of your eyes.

Atari Skinning Remember those old-school Atari controllers? They caused some horrific injuries to players. In some of the worst cases, players encountered torn skin from the edges, cracks and corners, as well as from getting fingers and your thumb web pinched between the joystick and the base. People would get calluses, bleeding fingers and you’d probably end up with a bacterial infection.
Plus, those controllers were a breeding ground of bacteria and fungi too, so once you had a open wound and sore, and didn’t take enough of a break to heal, you’d probably end up with a severe blood infection or something flesh-eating. In 1983, there was actually a mini-plague from these kind of injuries.
FPS Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Prolonged use of a computer mouse and keyboard can be detrimental to your health even for regular folk. When you’re a gamer, who plays FPS’s 24/7, it’ll lead to a compression of your carpal tunnel in your wrist. If untreated, it’ll result in tumours developing in the wrist and will cause numbness.
If left untreated, you’ll most likely lose the use of your hands permanently.
Nintendo Arthritis Technically, this doesn’t come from the Nintendo exclusively; any game console will do it to you. This comes from excessive and repetitive play on a gaming console.
In the long run, you’re looking at crippled joints and cancerous callouses if you don’t manage your play time and make sure to take care of your joints and hands.
Playstation Thumb One of the biggest issues with the Playstation 2’s controller was the friction that it caused on players’ thumbs after a gaming marathon. If you didn’t watch your hands, you’d get abrasions on your thumbs from the persistent use of the analog stick.
Most dedicated gamers would mash their thumbs into oblivion over their dedication to FIFa and Call of Duty.
WASD Syndrome This injury refers to the use of the W, A, S, and D letters on your computer keyboard, which are the most common ones to move characters around on PC games (think Half-Life, WoW or Doom.)
The repetitive strain on the finger joints can lead to arthritic symptoms with your muscles becoming deformed and your fingers looking like sausages. It’s not pretty.
WiiMote Injuries When the Nintendo Wii hit markets, it didn’t take long for someone to get hurt. While the WiiMote is innovative and allows players to get more physical, it also allows you to cause serious injury.
Players have reported WiiMotes going through tvs, windows, causing black eyes and contusions, and even has led to several shoulder dislocations while playing Wii Tennis and Bowling.
Nintendonitis and Wii Hip The first is a term used to describe tendon injuries of the hands and wrists from gripping the controllers and remotes. Many players have reported stress injuries from playing too long.
Also, the Wii balance board, in conjunction with WiiFit, has been the cause of far too many injuries to knees and hips, as problems and fractures occur resulting from severe falls.
Xbox Hypertrophy While each console has it’s benefits and problems, there’s a unique injury that happens to Xbox players exclusively called hypertrophy. This is the term that’s given to your hands when they swell and become misshapen through the persistent use of the awkwardly-shaped controller.
Makes them look like puffy mittens, and it takes a lot of physio to get them back to normal.
Seizures Long-term gaming can trigger undiagnosed epilepsy and lead to seizures. There’s currently no scientific evidence that video games can cause traditionally-classified epilepsy, but the field of study is still relatively young.
There have been cases, however, of severely fatal seizures being caused in people who already had the condition and didn’t know it, or didn’t take it into account when gaming. Even if not fatal, seizures can lead to brain lesions and other physical ailments.
Game Transfer Phenomena This isn’t a specific gaming injury, but it can lead to it. This is when you start seeing your games in real life. It takes many forms, but the most popular is the “Tetris Effect.” This is when you start to see Tetronimos falling from the sky, and you find yourself distracted by how various blocks would fit in the city skyline, on the street, etc… Then you end up in an accident.
The other version is when you see a game’s interface burned on your retina’s from staring too long. It’s like the burn-in you see on your tv after a static image has been there too long. Players have reported seeing this after a marathon session of Guitar Hero and anything that has a lot of data on the periphery of your screen.
Death This is the ultimate end for people who don’t know when to hit pause, save game and switch off the console. There have been cases of gamers going to such long stretches without food or sleep, that they’ve collapsed from exhaustion, fallen into a coma and died. This happens more often than it should.
Then there’s the other end of the spectrum; gamers that have been murdered or committed suicide due to in-game conflicts and real world issues.
