Golden Globes 2020 Nominations

Marriage Story stole the show with six Golden Globe nominations held at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Monday, followed by The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood who each received five nods apiece.  

Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver play parents on the verge of a divorce in Marriage Story in trailers for director Noah Baumbach’s Netflix romantic dramedy.

Martin Scorsese’s latest masterpiece, The Irishman also got the most nominations at the 25th annual Critics’ Choice Awards. It tells the story of Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran, a man with a lot on his mind.

And Once Upon A Time In Hollywood tells the story of TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), who make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore.

Golden Globes 2020: Marriage Story stole the show on Monday with six nominations followed by The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood who each followed with five nods 

Phoebe Waller Bridge’s Fleabag got THREE nominations, including Best Comedy Series. The Crown and The Marvellous Mrs Maisel followed with two nominations apiece in what is a great success story for the titles.   

Andrew Scott features in the Best TV Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of the Priest in Waller-Bridge’s two series sit-com about the dating disasters of a sexually insatiable young woman living in London.

Waller-Bridge also, who won plaudit for her role as the show’s titular character, also features in the category for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Elsewhere Killing Eve, co-written by Waller-Bridge and based on author Luke Jennings’ novel Codename Villanelle, takes a worthy spot in the category for Best Television Series – Drama.

Jodie Comer, the show’s leading lady, features in the category for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama.

The actress faces stiff competition from fellow Brit Olivia Colman, who gets a nod for her well-received portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, season three.

Acclaim: Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood which stars Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio received five nods

Jennifer Aniston also features for The Morning Show, while Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon go head to head in the same category for their roles in Big Little Lies.

Sacha Baron Cohen also joins the British nominations following his appearance in The Spy, winning a place in the category for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Jared Harris features in the same category thanks to his role as Soviet Inorganic chemist Valery Legasov in Netflix drama Chernobyl.

The category for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television also features a British presence, with Helen Mirren winning a nomination for her role in Catherine the Great.

Netflix has dominated awards season so far and led on Monday in total nominations, thanks to Marriage Story, The Irishman, Chernobyl, The Crown,and Unbelievable. 

No females were nominated in the best director category.

The Irishman won best film from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review. Marriage Story virtually swept the IFP Gotham Awards. 

Angel Of Darkness star Dakota Fanning, This Is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson and Golden Globe winner Tim Allen announced the nominations from the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Ricky Gervais will host the awards themselves. It will be his fifth time at the podium after hosting in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016

He is no stranger to awards himself, having picked up three Golden Globes, two Primetime Emmys and seven BAFTAs. Last year’s hosts were Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg. 

The Golden Globes are voted by journalists who make up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. 

The Golden Globes ceremony celebrates its 77th year in 2020 and the nominations were streamed on the official Facebook page and on the Golden Globes website. 

The awards will take place at the Beverly Hills Hilton and will air on Sunday, January 5 on NBC at 8pm ET.
