These stories are never easy. And they seem to be even more difficult when a child is involved. In their short times on earth, the world has already tried to break them. But, as we’ve seen with other recipients, their spirits continue to thrive and their strength puts everyone else’s to shame. There’s no one who fits that description better than Dior.
Dior was a healthy, growing 5-year-old. She was active in gymnastics, cheerleading, and ballet and always spent her free time in the living room making up cheers and dance routines.
Dior began to feel ill in April 2016. After three days, doctors diagnosed her with walking pneumonia, prescribed her antibiotics, and sent her home. But Dior wasn’t getting any better.
One morning her mother went to wake her up for breakfast but “Dior complained she couldn’t feel her legs, she rolled out of bed and sort of…flopped on the floor. She was crying, ‘Mommy I can’t…I can’t’,” she recalls.
Her mom called 911 and within hours her vitals were so bad she was intubated and on a CPAP machine. While doctors scrambled to find out what was wrong, Dior’s mom was sat in the waiting room.
After what felt like an eternity, doctors finally had a diagnosis: Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare condition where the body’s immune system becomes confused and attacks the central nervous system.
In only 2 days, both of Dior’s lungs had collapsed, she was put on a breathing machine, and received blood transfusions, plasmapheresis, and a tracheostomy. From this point on she would require a wheelchair and wouldn’t be able to hold her head up without assistance.
Dior spent her 6th birthday in intensive care.
Three months later, Dior was released from the hospital. But even after those three long months, a lot was still up in the air. Guillain-Barre is a true medical conundrum – some children make a full recovery while others don’t; some patients recover in two months, some in two years. Unfortunately for Dior, she had made very little progress.
In 2018, our very own John Resig traveled to Tampa Bay to see Dior and her family to figure out a way to help. Ahead of his visit, Chive Charities Green Ribbon donors had gifted the family a brand new BraunAbility ADA-accessible van.
Dior was finally able to go back to her favorite place, school, and now she had a new set of wheels to get her there.
Looking after a sick child has been a struggle on its own for Dior’s mother, Candace. Along with the round-the-clock attention and care she gives Dior, she is also a 3rd-grade teacher and single full-time mother of two to Dior and her younger sister Chace. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how she’s able to do it all.
After surveying Dior’s house and finding many health hazards and issues with its accessibility, John was determined to get them fixed. He called on Chivers to help out in any way they could. To say that they all stepped up is an understatement.
The goal was set at $20,000. The cost of the many home renovations that were needed quickly added up. After only one day, $26,817 was raised for Dior and her family. The current total has almost doubled to $42,000!
Later that year, with the help of the Tampa Bay Chivers, Dior celebrated her 8th birthday in style. They organized a birthday celebration at the Pottery Patch where Dior could show off her creativity. She spent the day surrounded by friends, family, and the overwhelmingly generous folks of Chive Nation.
Most recently, Dior and her family spent the weekend in Miami and drove down there in the van. She has also become a little music maker, filming singing videos and putting them up on YouTube. It’s great to know that Dior’s bright smile continues to shine through even the darkest days of the past couple of years.
Kids Dior’s age, no matter the obstacles, could use all of the help they can get. In order to be that helping hand, consider becoming a monthly Green Fund donor and be a huge part of the healing process for these children and their families. With a donation to Chive Charities, you’re helping us pay it forward, change lives for the better, and make the world 10% happier. DONATE HERE.
