Harry comforts crying child and jokes with mother before she complains about not seeing Meghan

Prince Harry was forced to comfort a crying youngster after the little boy broke down in tears when he realised he wasn’t going to meet Meghan Markle.

The Duke of Sussex was alongside his wife in Chichester, Sussex today, greeting thousands of people in the crowds who had been waiting hours for a glimpse of the couple.

As the prince makes his way along the line of wellwishers, he pauses in front of a young boy and girl waiting patiently to meet the royal.

Before he notices the crying boy, a courteous Harry (pictured) shakes the hand of a young girl, asking: 'What's your name? It's very nice to meet you.'

Upon spotting the prince, the young boy bursts into tears, causing the royal to put his arm on the youngster’s shoulder and ask ‘are you alright?’

The 34-year-old then turns to the young girl again and adds: ‘You really need to cheer him up.’

Shortly after, a woman standing behind the boy says: ‘We didn’t get to see the princess.’

On royal visits, it is usually customary for a royal to greet members of the public on one side of the road as the other tends to the audience across the road.

Today saw the Duke and Duchess of Sussex greeted wellwishers in the county that inspired their royal titles on their first joint official visit.

Harry and Meghan started a busy day of engagements on an eagerly anticipated whistle-stop tour of Sussex.

The couple kicked off their trip at Edes House in Chichester, the county town of West Sussex.

Meghan was wearing a camel Armani coat, a dark green Hugo Boss skirt and a shirt from And Other Stories paired with nude suede stilettos.

Meghan, with her hair swept into a bun, appeared delighted to see the crowds, dabbing the sides of her eyes and smiling as she greeted people.
