Have Wales gone top of the world rankings?

Wales beat England 13-6 to go top of the World Rugby rankings.

Warren Gatland’s side needed only to win against their rivals to ensure they climbed into first.

Could England have gone top?

England also had the chance to go top, but needed to beat Wales by at least 16 points.

There had been a chance for Ireland to go top without even playing this weekend, but they needed a draw at Cardiff and either a draw or defeat for New Zealand.

Who was top of the world rankings?

Reigning world champions New Zealand held the number one spot in the world rankings prior to Wales’ win.

That is despite victory over arch-rivals Australia that saw their position under threat.

But it is a credit to the All Blacks’ domination that they had been ranked the best in the world for ten years straight, with South Africa the previous team to rank above them in 2009.
