Crolla, 32, has put himself in position to challenge for his old world title after suffering two back-to-back defeats against Jorge Linares in 2016 and 2017.

Lomachenko stepped up in weight to take on Linares and managed to stop him in the 10th round to pick up the WBA world lightweight title.

The Ukrainian, 31, took his first and only professional defeat in a controversial decision when he fought Orlando Salido in only his second fight in 2009.

Salido didn’t make weight for the fight and came in the much bigger man, Salido also got away with a number of low blows that went unnoticed by the referee.

Since then Lomachenko has gone on to put his name in the hat as one of boxing’s modern day pound-for-pound greats.

Crolla has picked himself back up since the Linares defeats and had two wins in 2018 against Edson Ramirez on the undercard for the Anthony Joshua vs Joseph Parker bout in Cardiff in March.

And Daud Yordan was defeated at Manchester Arena in November on the Oleksandr Usyk vs Tony Bellew undercard to give him a winning return to form.

Now, he faces the biggest test of his career to date and a win for Crolla leave him able to contemplate potential retirement a happy man with two world titles around his waist — and an epic, unlikely, victory to boot.
