KATE GARRAWAY’S husband Derek Draper contracted coronavirus a year ago in March 2020 which left him critically ill.

After over a year in hospital, he has finally returned to the home he shares with his GMB star wife and their children.

What is the latest on Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper?

On April 9, it was revealed Derek has return to his family home in North London.

Derek has now been taken off all machines and breathing apparatus – but his family have been warded that still faces a “long and gruelling” fight to full health.

Kate has spent thousands on adapting their home for his return, and Derek will need 24-hour care as he battles back to full health.

A friend said: “The professional medical teams who have been looking after Derek have decided to release him from hospital into 24-hour care at home.

“They noticed that his cognition and consciousness had stalled and, if anything, was going backwards over the last couple of months.”

On March 23, 2021 Kate Garraway’s documentary Finding Derek aired on ITV.

In the film Kate was seen breaking down in tears as Derek spoke for the first time after coming out of a coma.

In heartbreaking scenes, the Good Morning Britain presenter revealed how emotional it was to see such progress after 214 days in hospital.

Kate shared a video of herself filming her husband during a rehab session and captured the extraordinary moment.

When the doctor asked if the movement was ok, he said: “Pain”.

Speaking about the moment afterwards, Kate said: “So that is the first time I saw him mouth a word and he mouths pain, I saw it really clearly and I said ‘pain, pain’.

Unable to fight back tears, the mum-of-two said: “It makes me cry because that is a massive breakthrough- the fact his brain can communicate to his mouth to shape the word pain.”

Many stars such as Piers Morgan and Ben Shephard, who Kate hosts Good Morning Britain with, have sent their best wishes to the star and her husband.

Piers tweeted: “This breaks my heart. Few happier, more positive people than @kategarraway. Or a more loyal, decent friend & colleague.

“So many families like hers going through so much unimaginable anguish in this crisis. Sending all my love to Kate & continuing to root for Derek.”

She’s thanked everyone for their ongoing support and wished other families going through similar struggles her best wishes.
