How Meghan Markle swapped dramatic makeup for a ‘pared back natural’ look

Meghan Markle swapped her usual dramatic and glamorous make-up for a stripped back look today, as she made her first public appearance since revealing she suffered a miscarriage this summer.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, looked stunning as she praised the ‘quiet heroes’ of the coronavirus pandemic who have supported communities in a clip recorded for CNN.

The royal stepped away from her usual dark eyeliner and dramatic contouring for the occasion,  instead adding delicate lash extensions, a sweeping of highlighter and a stunning rouge lipstick.

Make-up artist Lisa Little told FEMAIL the mother-of-one was ‘showing her softer side’ with the look, saying: ‘Megan opted to do without the usual Hollywood glamour dark eyeliner, bronzed contour look and chose the softer more radiant option.’

The Duchess swept her hair into a ponytail for the video appearance, allowing two tendrils to fall dramatically to frame her face for the clip.

During her time in the royal family, Meghan opted to wear a more dramatic makeup look, with bold eyeliner framing her lids and dark heavy ‘brushed’ brows.

But her latest appearance, which she appeared to film while sitting on a bench in the grounds of the £11million ($14million) California mansion she shares with Prince Harry, was a step away from her Hollywood glamour look.

Lisa said: ‘Megan’s recent public appearance showed us the softer soft of her – when it came to her makeup that is.

The makeup artist explained: ‘Her skin had a healthy sheer coverage about it, more than likely choosing a cc cream which is used to even out skin tone rather than a foundation, for this look.

‘The flush of colour on her cheeks would have been achieved by using a liquid blush, keeping her skin texture luminous rather than powdery and dull.’

Meanwhile she added the look appeared to highlight Meghan’s flawless skin, adding: ‘With her perfectly placed liquid highlight she looked preened to perfection.’

Lisa said the Duchess had opted for a more natural beauty look to showcase her eyes, saying: ‘Although clearly still one of her best features, Megan played down her eyes, keeping her lids clear of eyeshadow.’

She pointed out the royal had matched her light eyeshadow with the flowers in her garden, explaining: ‘She chose to apply a touch of mascara and smoked out her bottom lash line with a soft mauve eyeshadow – not only to compliment her perfect pout but the background flowers too!’

‘I personally think Megan got her makeup look just right and looked preened to perfection.’

The video marked the first time the Duchess has been seen since she wrote an article for the New York Times last month, revealing she lost her child in July, and described the ‘unbearable grief’ it caused her and 36-year-old Harry.

She said: ‘We saw communities standing up and taking action.

‘When kids’ lunch programs came to a halt, we saw our neighbours make sure that those children received the nutrition they need.’

She added that ‘we as a community showed up’ to deliver food needed by vulnerable people, adding that ‘we also saw the power of the human spirit’ and that ‘we have the power to remind someone else that there is hope’.

She did not address her own loss, but told how 2020 had been ‘a year that has been universally challenging for everyone,’ before praising those who rose to the occasion and fed hungry neighbours going through tough times.

Meghan, who was wearing Catherine Zoraida earrings and a Cartier bracelet, had been speaking as part of the CNN Heroes series which praises those making a difference in communities.
