How to save cash when your older kids move back home — plus win £50,000 in The Sun raffle

ARE your big kids costing you big money? Millennials and young professionals who return to the nest occupy 4.5million rooms a night around the country, surveys reveal.

That makes the Hotel of Mum and Dad larger than any chain in the world. Here are ways to save cash while accommodating them.

Here’s how you can save cash while accommodating your older kids if they have returned home

COOKING: Whipping up an impromptu feast every day will cost a bomb, so plan and prepare your meals in advance. Do not throw out leftovers — freeze them instead using a ten-pack of meal-preparation containers for £7.47 from Amazon.

That is cheaper than those from meal-prep specialist Igluu at £14.85. Save: £7.38

LAUNDRY: Only do washing with full loads, rather than more frequent smaller washes. This makes the most of the laundry detergent and you use less water too. Do not be fooled by a detergent bottle that looks empty.

Take off the cap and get scraping. You will find at least half a cup. Pick up some Persil non-biological washing liquid (57 washes) for £7 at Tesco, down from £9. Save: £2

Plan and prepare your meals for the family in advance to avoid the high costs of an impromptu feast

SHOPPING: Check the house for what you already have before you do your shopping, so you do not up pile up products you rarely use or do not need. But DO stock up on essentials, so you do not run out unexpectedly and go on a midweek splurge.

Use vouchers and coupons to bolster your spending power and sign up to supermarket loyalty schemes to rack up points. I recommend getting a Nectar card, as you collect points in so many different places, including Sainsbury’s and Argos.

WASHING UP: More mouths to feed means more pots and plates to wash up too. Avoid forking out more on water bills by scraping and quickly rinsing plates before washing them up.

This way, the water stays clean for longer and you won’t have to re-fill the sink. Another handy tip is to mix water in with your washing-up liquid. It works just as well and lasts twice as long.
