According to sources, using Oddjob in GoldenEye was cheating
Rare/Nintendo There’s a group of guys out there (myself included) that can count on their greatest bro relationships remaining eternally strong, due to a video game. But not just any video game, but the multiplayer game to end all multiplayer games. The one with the Golden Gun, the “Facility” level and the ultimate death-match “Slappers Only” mode where you only can slap each other instead of using weapons. Yep, I’m talking about GoldenEye 007 on the N64.
That’s the game that cemented friendships, made enemies and made every high school party legendary. But you’d be surprised to learn that we almost didn’t have that epic opportunity to play multiplayer at all. It was a fluke.
The same goes for Oddjob.
Rare/Nintendo Developed by Rare 21 years ago, it was actually a pretty novice team that put the game together. Originally, it was supposed to be a simple movie-tie in, that was supposed to be a 2D side scroller. You can find a whole oral history of the game development over at Mel Magazine, and it’s a fascinating read.
One of the key takeaways for the interview is that the game was being developed well before the Nintendo 64 was even on the market, so they didn’t actually know what the platform could actually do. So a lot of the game development and design was all fly-by night and somehow, it evolved to a 3D render with an open world feel. This uncertainly allowed Rare to set the bar for what was going to come next for gaming.
Rare/Nintendo But let’s cut to the chase; the multiplayer. This almost didn’t happen as most first-person shooters were single-player games. But when the team learned that there would be 4 ports on the 64, they started planning a multiplayer. Except they didn’t tell Nintendo what they were doing.
They did all the programming in the last 4 months before the deadline and even included all the various Bond villains and Bond actors themselves. Nintendo loved it, but told them to lose the Bonds as they didn’t have the permission of the actors.
Suddenly, a legendary multiplayer game was born.
Rare/Nintendo The developers go on to share other juicy stories, but the most important on is their opinion of Oddjob. According to them using him is “definitely cheating” because of how he was quickly programmed.
When they were play-testing, they found that the auto-aim of the weapons went over his head, so he was so fucking hard to hit. The guys never really felt like taking that out, or changing the programming, because who’d really pick Oddjob over Jaws, Trevelyan or Xenia Onatopp? It was a fun little easter egg, and something they never figured would become a huge deal.
Rare/Nintendo But given that it’s easier to take out people with the short assassin and his dangerous hat, he’s a popular choice for newbies and the most dishonest of your friend circle. According to one of the key developers, they could have made the changes, but why not just let the players decide on their own rules and punishments? So we did.
For my group, he was a huge, fucking joke. Some days, he was outright banned as a selectable character, and on other days, if you picked him, you got ribbed, sacked and smacked around, but then the 3 of us would gang up on the buddy that picked Oddjob and just fucking wrecked him until he rage quit.
Because that guy was a pissy bitch.
Rare/Nintendo So there you have it: the truth behind this legendary game and it’s all night deathmatch sessions. Even two decades later, it’s still viewed as one of the greatest and best selling games ever for the Nintendo consoles. All because we had a need for a 4-way split screen, doubling-fisted weapons melee of Bond-ian proportions.
Makes me want to ask my mom if she’s still got my N64 somewhere with all my games.
Who’s coming over? I’ll even let you play as Oddjob, cause I’m a nice guy.
