Jose Mourinho charged by the FA after he vented his frustrations into a TV camera

Jose Mourinho has been charged with improper conduct by the FA after he appeared to mouth obscenities into a television camera following Manchester United’s win over Newcastle 10 days ago.

Mourinho has until 6pm on Friday to respond to the charge but could face a touchline ban when United face his old club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday if he is found guilty.

It is alleged that Mourinho said ‘fodas filhos de puta’ – ‘f**k off sons of b*****s’ – in his native Portuguese at a BT Sport camera while wagging a little finger as he walked down the touchline after United’s dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford.

The FA are understood to have used linguistics experts and lip readers to confirm what Mourinho said before deciding to charge the 55-year-old.

A statement read: ‘Jose Mourinho has been charged following Manchester United’s game against Newcastle United on 6 October 2018.

‘It is alleged that his language at the end of the fixture, as captured by the broadcast footage, was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper. He has until 6pm on 19 October 2018 to respond to the charge.’

Wayne Rooney was hit with a two-match ban in April 2011 after swearing into a TV camera after scoring a hat-trick at West Ham.

Even though Mourinho’s offensive language was in Portuguese, the FA are aware that Premier League games are beamed around the world to countries where the obscenities could be understood.

Asked about the finger gesture after the game, he tried to play it down by saying: ‘No it’s a finger, smaller than the others.’
