Julie Bishop makes SHOCK announcement about running for Prime Minister

Julie Bishop has opened up about the tumultuous leadership spill which saw her relegated to parliament’s back benches.

The former Liberal deputy leader, 62, made an unsuccessful run at the party’s leadership before WhatsApp messages revealed her colleagues had conspired against her.

In an interview with Who Magazine‘s 2018 Sexiest People List issue, Ms Bishop refused to rule out a return to the upper echelon of politics and said she was ‘considering her options’ after quitting as foreign affairs minister.

‘I don’t focus on regrets. I’m very optimistic. I focus on what can be, rather than what should have been,’ she told the publication.

Leaked messages showed a coordinated betrayal against Ms Bishop as she attempted to succeed Malcolm Turnbull as Liberal Party leader and Prime Minister.

Ms Bishop was knocked out in the first round of voting.

‘I wasn’t aware of the WhatsApp messages and no-one told me of them. That was disappointing. But I’m comfortable with decisions I took. It was a very intense, high-pressure environment and I had to make a number of decisions without my usual deep analysis of the consequences of those decisions,’ she said.

She said people had told her they were puzzled and frustrated with politicians after the leadership spill, saying they disapproved of the ‘self-interest’ shown by MPs in Canberra.

There has been speculation she could succeed Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove when his five-year term finishes in March next year.

Ms Bishop admitted her life had ‘obviously changed dramatically in a matter of days’ but remained tight-lipped when pressed about her plans for the next ten years.

She also appeared to make a joke about the pregnancy scandal involving former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce and his press secretary Vikki Campion.

‘Politicians and sexiness is often not associated… Politicians and sex – that’s often in the same sentence!’
